Notes
a. Note:   According to his death certificate, Charles Gallagher was born in Pittsburgh to parents born in Ireland, Charles and Mary. John J. Houlihan, in his 1960's genealogy, placed him in Butler Co., but I'm unable to locate him there as yet; there were numerous Gallaghers/Gallahers in Butler Co. and he may yet be identified. Calvary Cemetery (Pittsburgh) records for his son James indicate that James was born in Clarion Co., PA - this lends credence to the possibility of Charles being from Clarion or Butler counties. However, I remain unable to locate Charles in PA in the 1850 or 1860 censuses.
Two Charles Gallaghers appear in the 1867-68 Pittsburgh Directory, one living in the 2nd ward, Pittsburgh, occupation "coal heaver." The other was a laborer living at Prospect at Beach Alley. The Pittsburgh & Allegheny Directory 1868-69 shows Charles Gallagher, "laborer," living at 28 Bedford Ave, Pittsburgh; if this is our Charles, he would have been married at this time and had his first two children.
Charles and Catherine/Kate, with their 3 sons and an 11 year old female boarder were living in the 5th census ward of Pittsburgh at the time of the 1870 census. His occupation is shown as "grading contractor" and his age is shown as 40, 13 years older than his wife (he would have been 36, according to his death certificate). His place of birth in Pennsylvania in 1830 or 1834, if true, means that the Gallagher family immigrated earlier than that.
At the 1880 census, Charles, age 50, was living on Second Ave., Pittsburgh with his wife and 5 sons. His occupation is now shown as "hotel" - which may mean he worked at one - and he was not able to read or write English. He was born in PA, of parents both born in Ireland.
He appears in the 1885 Pittsburgh Directory, no occupation shown, living at 104 Webster Ave., along with sons Henry and James. He's listed in the 1895 Pittsburgh Directory, again with no occupation shown, living at 105 Webster Ave., with sons Charles C. and Henry.
He must have died shortly after the directory was completed; according to his death certificate and his obituary in the "Pittsburgh Post Gazette," Charles Gallagher died from chronic bronchitis of 18 months duration on Tuesday, 14 May 1895 at 1:46 pm. He was a contractor and resided at 105 Webster, 7th ward, Pittsburgh where he'd lived for 2 years. The funeral was held from his home on 16 May; a requiem mass was held at St. Paul's Cathedral. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh, in grave 1, lot 346, Section F. His mother-in-law, Rose Dougan, had been buried there 2 months prior, a son James the previous year, and two more sons followed in 1898 (Henry) and 1914 (Bernard). His wife, Catherine, was later buried there. Cemetery records indicate that he was 61 at his death. On 19 April 1998 I visited this burial plot and found no tombstones marked Gallagher or Dougan at the site.

According to "Irish Family Names," Gallagher is a Donegal name.
