Notes
a. Note:   From Mary's death certificate whose information was provided by A. Ritter, presumably her husband, we learn that she was born in Germany 3 May 1855 to Frank Koss and Mary Baber/Bober, both also of Germany. From the baptismal record of daughter Rose at St. Albertus Church, Mary's place of birth was "Sorussia - occ." It is not known if other members of the Koss family immigrated with Mary and August Ritter in 1888. Her death certificate also states that she was 28 when she married (about 1873) and that she'd born 9 children, only 4 of which were living at the time of her death in January, 1907. Six children have been identified to date; perhaps 3 were born and died before the immigration, especially possible in light of their marriage in 1873.
I located the baptism record of Maryanna, daughter of Franz Koss and Mary Bober, in 1855 in Strzepcz, Gmina Linia, Wejherowo, Pomorskie, Poland. According to her marriage record, she was born in Zemblauermühle (the mill of Zemblau), Kreis Neustadt Westpreussen, Preussen but was living in Leohain/Leobor, Neustadt, Danzig, Westpreussen at the time of her marriage as were her parents.
Mary Ritter appears first in US census records in 1900, living with her husband and 4 children at 815 Canfield, Detroit, MI. She and August had been married 23 years; she'd given birth to 9 children, only 4 of whom were alive at 1900, according to the census record. The same children's birth/death numbers are given on her 1907 death certificate. She immigrated in 1888 from Poland/Germany with her husband; son Frank was the first child born in the US. Her given name is shown as "Marie" in the birth record of son Herman.
Mary died of uremia and jaundice at 586 Canfield, Detroit. She'd been ill for about 3 weeks prior to her death. Dr. P. C. Dodlerhoff/Dodlenhoff signed the certificate of death; M. Kulwicki was the undertaker. She was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery 9 January 1907 in a single grave in Section 6, grave 326, tier 3. She was 51 years, 8 months 3 days old at her death. Mt. Olivet Cemetery records, Detroit, confirm her burial there from St. Albertus Church.
