Notes
a. Note:   Rose Ritter was baptized as "Rosalia Ritter" at St. Albertus Church, Detroit 9 Feb. 1990. She had been born 27 Jan. 1890. Her baptismal sponsors were Rudolph Muller and Rosalia Muller. Rose appears as a 10 year old in the 1900 census, the second surviving child of Mary and August Ritter to have been born in Michigan. She was a student at that time.
She appears again in the 1910 census as a 20 year old living in the home of her older sister Theresa and brother-in-law John Shartz. Their brother August was also living with them. Rose was employed as an "order-taker at a wholesale drug store."
Remembered by Marion Ritter Houlihan as a "crusty" old lady; brash and plain spoken. Rose Ritter made moonshine in her basement during prohibition, in her home on Dubay St., Detroit. The Detroit police used to visit the house to taste their "wares." Marion remembers going to the market with her aunt and buying corn and hops for making the liquor - she made kimmel, schnapps, rock and rye and whiskey. The house used to smell of alcohol giving Marion, she thinks, her lifelong dislike of the smell of liquor.
Rose died of a stroke, before her husband, in 1943. She was buried from Joseph P. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 13501 Van Dyke, Detroit, MI. She is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit with her husband, in section 24, lot 1180. A red granite tombstone marks the site of her grave; there is no tombstone marking the site of Frank's grave.
