Notes
a. Note:   Theresa Ritter first appears in the 1900 census as a 15 year old, living with her parents and siblings at 815 Canfield, Detroit. Her name was listed as "Trace," a diminutive of Theresa and pronounced "Tracee." Her occupation was shown as [sic] "tobacco striper." She'd immigrated to the US with her parents in 1888.
She appears in the 1910 census married to John Shartz, her first husband, a German-born cigar maker. She'd had one child, daughter Mary; they were living at 267 Grandy, Detroit. Her sister Rose and brother August were living in the home as well.
In the 1920's, Marion Ritter Houlihan recalls visiting her Grandfather Ritter (August) at her "Auntie Tracy's" house in Hamtramck; he apparently lived with her in his last years. Theresa Ritter was godmother to Marion Mildred Ritter Houlihan. She owned an ice cream store in Hamtramck, MI before Prohibition; Marion remembers eating ice cream seated on a wrought iron chair at a table in the store about 1930. Later, she owned a "beer garden" on Lumpkin St. in Hamtramck. She and her second husband lived in a house attached to the tavern. A rather dignified woman, frank-speaking; Marion remembers being a little afraid of her, never knowing what she was going to say. Apparently she didn't much like her sister-in-law, Constance Ewald Ritter. There was talk of different accents between the Ewald and Ritter "girls" - the Ritters may have been Kashubs.
Later in her life, she had a stroke. Marion Ritter Houlihan remembers helping her daughter, Theresa, move her in bed at home when she was dying & found a gun there! She died almost 1 year after her second husband, although she had married a third time in the year just prior to her death. She was buried from the Leo J. Miller Funeral Home, 9222 Joseph Campau, Detroit (Hamtramck?) at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit on 24 Jan. 1945. Her death is reported in St. Florian Church records, Hamtramck. She was living at 8734 Lumpkin where she'd lived with Joseph Papiesz prior to his death. Although she'd married again after the death of Joe Papiesz, to a George Thomas, Theresa is buried as "Theresa Papiesz" with Joseph and daughter Mary at Mt. Olivet, section 23, grave 423.
