Notes
a. Note:   The spelling of the name as "Dougan" comes from the 1895 obituary of Rose Dougan, widow of Peter. However, the census records are inconsistent and the name is found spelled both Dougan and Dugan.
The first mention of Peter Dougan in Butler Co., PA records is in an agreement made 22 Feb. 1836 and recorded 23 April 1838 (Butler Co. Deeds Book K., page 529) wherein Andrew Dougan, his father, deeded Peter 159 acres and 98 perches of land in Clearfield Township, Butler Co. on condition that Peter care for his parents during their lives and allow them to continue to live in their dwelling on the property and "...do everything that a good obedient son ought to do." He is again mentioned in the will of his father, Andrew Dougan, dated 24 June 1836 and recorded 29 Oct 1838, Butler Co. Will Book B., page 95. Peter inherited the residual of his father's "goods, stock, chattels and household furniture and farming utensils..."
Peter, with his wife Rosanna, next appear in Butler Records (Deed Book M., page 326) selling 11 acres of land in Clearfield Township on 4 Jan. 1841 to James McCue for $117.12 1/2. From the legal description of the land, it can be identified as part of the 159 acres Peter inherited from his father. The deed was recorded 13 Jan. 1841.
In an indenture dated 19 Nov. 1846, Peter and Rosanna sold 50 acres in Clearfield Township to Peter's brother Manasses Dougan for $1 "in consideration of services rendered." (Butler Co. Deeds, Book Q., page 19) This land was also part of Peter's inheritance.
Peter "Dugan" appears in the 1850 census on page 185, Clearfield Township, Butler Co., PA (not listed in the 1850 census index). He is a 37 year old farmer, born in PA, owning real estate valued at $700. His wife Rose Ann, 4 children and his mother, Susan, 65, were living with him.
In 1854, Rosanna Dougan purchased 66 acres in Clearfield Township from John & Ann Gallaher for $66.82, but her husband was not a part of this transaction. (Butler Co. Deeds Book V., page 613)
Peter "Dougan," wife Roseann and family appear in the 1860 census on pg. 242, Clearfield Township, Butler Co. There are now 7 children. Peter's mother was not living with them; she likely died between 1850 & 1860. I have not located her grave nor that of Andrew, her husband - they were most likely buried on family property. Peter's personal property was valued at $200 and land at $1000.
On 21 Feb. 1861, Peter and Rosanna Dougan entered into an indenture to sell a lot in the village of Coylesville, Clearfield Township to James Russell for $100. (Butler Co. Deeds Book 2, page 198) They had purchased the lot 20 Oct. 1858; the deed was recorded 22 Feb. 1861.
Peter does not appear in the 1870 census, either in Butler or Allegheny counties. Since his wife Rose was living in Pittsburgh by February, 1864, she likely made the move when her husband died; her mother died in Clearfield Twp. in June of 1864.. I have not been able to locate the grave of Peter Dougan nor those of his parents. It's believed that they were likely buried on the family farm property.

According to "Irish Family Names," Dougan is an east Ulster name. Duggan is the spelling most often found in northern Cork/southern Galway.
