Notes
a. Note:   Catherine McFerren Pender Kinlen was born in Ireland, though the year is in question - she reports her year of birth as 1827 in 1850, 1833 in 1860, and 1830 in 1900. Her obituary reports her age at her death 30 May 1906 as 75, but St. Mary's Cemetery records indicate that she was 84 at the time of her death, 75 having been crossed out! Even her death certificate is incorrect - it shows her birth date as 27 April 1831, but that she was 84 at death in 1906, giving her a birth year of 1822! I've used 27 April 1822 as her birth date, reflecting her age of 84.
She married James Pender, Sr. in 1848 and had a son, James, Jr. Her husband died shortly after; she married James Kinlen in about 1852.
In the 1860 census, (the census taker used only initials, unfortunately) her name is reported as J.C. Kinlen. I wonder if her "real name" started with a J.; we know she used "Kate" regularly and is shown by that name in several censuses. In that same census, a B.F. McFerron is also living in the house, a 22 year old female born in PA whose occupation is "moulder." If this is a younger sister of Catherine/Kate, her birth in PA seems to confirm J.J. Houlihan's information that the McFerrons immigrated earlier than 1850.
The 1900 census tells us more about Catherine who was a 70 year old widow at the time of the census. It lists her birth month and year in Ireland (see above) and also says that she migrated to the US in 1850, rather than the 1829 that J.J. Houlihan reported. (Note, however, that she married James Pender in PA in 1848, so she certainly immigrated earlier than 1850!) She was able to read, write and speak English and owned her own home "free." She was the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were still living at the time of the census; daughter Bridget died in 1881.
In 1900 she was living at 2013 Webster Ave, Pittsburgh with her unmarried, 31 year old daughter, Catherine M./Katie, a dressmaker.
According to her death certificate, St Mary's Cemetery records and her obituary in the Pittsburgh Press, Catherine "Kinlen"/"Kinlin" died Wednesday, 30 May 1906 from apoplexy. She was the widow of James H. Kinlen. The funeral was held at her residence at 1910 Webster Ave., Pittsburgh on Sat., June 2 at 8:30. A requiem mass was held at St. Brigid's Church at 9 am. She is buried at St. Mary's cemetery, Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, in Section O, lot 259, grave 3, in the same grave as granddaughter Ella/Ellen Kinlen who died 8 years later. The death certificate names her parents as John McFarren and Mary A. Doughtery/Hongherty, both born in Ireland.
