Note: The 1850 census shows James Pender, married to Catherine, living the the 6th ward of Pittsburgh. His occupation is listed as "drayman." One child is shown, a son James. According to J.J. Houlihan, James Pender, Sr. died in 1850; if that year is correct, it was after the June census date. James Pender is allegedly buried in the Gallagher plot at Calvary Cemetery, lot 157, section E along with his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter Genevieve/Jean. However, his death occurred almost 50 years prior to that plot being purchased & I doubt that he's buried there. ******************** "The Surnames of Ireland" reports the name Pender as being a shortened version of Prendergast, one of the powerful families which came to Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion. They are still found mainly in the places of their original settlement (Mayo, Tipperary). Some in Mayo assumed the name Fitzmaurice. ********************* RESEARCH NOTES: The 1841 Pittsburgh Bus Directory lists no Penders.
