Notes
a. Note:   Known as "The Professor," Julius Ewald was known by my Grandmother, Constance Ewald & cousin to Julius as a "sharp dresser," often wearing suits. He apparently looked a lot like his older brother Jacob; he smoked cigars, not surprisingly, as he owned the San Elmo Cigar Mfg. Co., Detroit, according to Al Ewald. The 1910 Detroit Directory shows Julius Ewald as a cigar manufacturer. However, a history of Detroit states that an Oscar Rosenberger founded the company in 1898; it was purchased by the Haas Brothers in 1918.
Julius Ewald is listed in the 1895 Detroit Directory as a cigar maker, boarding at 268 Canfield Ave E., the same addresses as his brother Joseph, also a cigar maker. I located 26 year old Julius Ewald, single, cigarmaker, on a ship's manifest, "The Southwark," arriving at the port of New York 26 Oct. 1897 from departure at Antwerp. He had apparently returned to Europe and was coming home to Detroit, MI, calling himself a citizen. An image of the manifest can be seen at [www.ellisisland.org].
Julius filed his Declaration of Intention to become a US citizen in Detroit Recorder's Court 8 July 1897. His sponsor was Emil J. Niedamanski. He stated that he'd arrived in the US in 1887, that he was a native of Prussian Poland and was 25 years old. It is not clear whether he ever finally became naturalized.
Julius and Josephine Ewald's 1899 marriage is recorded in the records of St. Josephat Church, Detroit. Witnesses were Joseph Pioruski (her brother?) and Augusta Ewalt (this person is not known at this time).
Julius appears in the 1900 census as a newlywed of 1 year, living in the same home as his brother, Joseph, at 233 Willis, Detroit. He gave his immigration year as 1897, several years after the arrival of his brothers -- the year may have actually been 1887 (as stated in the 1920 census; 1920 census shows 1888). In late 1900, daughter Agnes Anna was baptized at St. Josephat Church - the family was living at 180 Superior St., Detroit at that time. According to nephew Al, Julius and his brothers Jacob and Joseph used to sing in the church choir at St. Josephat Church. I found the name of Julius Ewald, Detroit, MI listed in the Cigar Makers' International Union of America "Cigar Makers' Official Journal," (Chicago: Aug 1903), Vol. XXVIII, pg. 15 as a new member [GoogleBooks].
By 1910, Julius and Josephine had 4 children and were living at 505 Alexandrine - the same address as brother August and Anna Ewald. Nephew Al Ewald recalls that Julius lived in the front of the house while brother Joseph and family lived in the back. Julius was a cigar maker at the San Telmo Cigar Mfg. Co. mentioned above. He and his wife had been married 11 years and they'd had 6 children, 4 of whom were living in 1910. His year of immigration is shown as 1888.
At the time of the 1920 census, Julius and his wife were living at 429 1/2 Willis with their 9 surviving children. Julius gave the year of his immigration as 1887 and 1897 as the year of his naturalization.
His death is recorded in St. Josephat Church death records on page 17. He was 60 years of age, died 1 Mar. 1937 and was buried 5 Mar. 1937 at Mt. Olivet with his parents in Section 15, lot 199.
