Notes
a. Note:   Listed on 1900 Census in Lucas Co. Pleasant Twp. Iowa Listed as Farmer
  Obit HANGED SELF IN BARN
Daniel Streeter, a well known Lucas county farmer, residing about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Columbia, hanged himself in his barn about 5:30 o'clock last Thursday morning. Before committing the awful deed of self destruction, he fired his home and the light of the burning building attracted the attention of his son, Walter, who resides about half a mile from the old homestead.
When his son made a hurried investigation he found the family home wrapped in flames and the body of his father hanging at the end of a rope attached to a beam in the buggy shed portion of the barn. At the time of the ghastly discovery the body was still warm and the supposition is that the man had been dead only a few minutes.
Domestic trouble is the alleged cause of the tragedy. According to the best obtainable information, Mr. Streeter was the owner of 265 acres of land and had been importuned by the family to deed 160 acres, (80 acres apiece), to his two sons. He had written a contract to that effect but had lately shown an unwillingness to fulfill the agreement. The mother, it appears, took sides with the sons, and on account of the trouble which had arisen, was at the home of the son, Walter, on the night preceding the tragedy.
Wednesday evening Mr. Streeter telephoned for his wife to come home, and on her refusal to comply with the request, informed her that she would soon be sorry for the part she had taken in the affair.
The two sons are Walter and William. There are also three daughters in the family, Mrs. Eunice Mayers, of Colorado, Mrs. Margaret Anderson, of Columbia, and Miss Laura, a clerk in a Columbia store.
Mr. Streeter is said to have been a man of violent temper and somewhat "queer" in many other respects. He suffered a very critical sickness about three or four years ago and was generally considered to be mentally unbalanced for some time after his physical recovery.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. E. Crandall, were held at the home of his son, Walter Streeter, on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which interment took place in the Oakdale cemetery.
Daniel Streeter was born in Monroe county, Indiana, and was 63 years, 11 months and 25 days old. When but four years of age he came with his parents to Iowa, locating in Pleasant township, where he has since resided. He was married about thirty-three years ago, and is survived by a wife and five grown children, who will have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
