Notes
a. Note:   r was baptized, they were living at 192 Superior. The 1895 Detroit Directory lists 2 August Ewalds - one a laborer living at 741 Rivard, the other a mason living at 596 Forest Ave, E. This is likely father and son, but it's not clear at this time which was which. In 1899, when son John/Pedro was baptized, their address was 433 Alexandrine St., Detroit. In 1903, when their twin children were baptized, they were living at 505 Alexandrine. An August Ewald filed his Declaration of Intent to become a US citizen 14 Feb. 1891 in Detroit Recorders Court. The sponsor was Joseph C. Brewe. He was sworn as a citizen 11 Oct 1895. It is not known whether this is the same August Ewald or, possibly, his father. August Ewald was listed in the 1893 City Directory of Detroit, commencing 1 Aug 1893, pg. 1462. He was living at 782 Alexandrine, between Superior and Willis, in a home with Joseph Ewald and Ignatius Webber. August Ewald appears in the 1910 census as a 46 year old, married 20 years, living with his wife and children at 505 Alexandrine, Detroit. He and his wife had had 12 children, only 7 of whom were still living at the time of the census (all at home). His immigration from Germany/Poland is shown as 1888. He was employed as a "laborer - outside work," the only Ewald man not employed as a cigar maker. In the book "Germans to America," Vol. 55, covering the period July, 1887 - April, 1888, edited by Ira A. Glazier and P. William Fiebig, Scholarly Press, Wilmington, DE, 1997, pg. 410 lists the arrival of an August Ewald, a 24 year old farmer. He arrived on the ship "America," 10 March 1888 at the port of Baltimore. This is likely the same August: the year of immigration is consistent with that stated by August in the 1910 census as his year of immigration and the age is about right. On the same ship, name listed right next to that of August, is a Frank Wisniewski, a 22 year old farmer. Also a passenger on the same ship was Michael Wisniewski, age 24, perhaps brother of Frank. Since August's mother's maiden name was Wisniewski, perhaps both Michael & Frank were cousins of August. The actual manifest provides no additional information, unfortunately, other than that August had one piece of luggage with him. August and his wife appear again in the 1920 census, still living at 505 Alexandrine, August then 50 and "Nettie" age 50. 5 children were living at home, Martha and Joseph having married and left the family home. August's immigration date is shown as 1889, his naturalization in 1899. August Ewald died 28 Jan. 1929 and was buried 1 Feb. 1929 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. This info is from St. Josephat Church records. Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit records them buried in Sec. 15, lot 90. According to his brother Joseph's prayer book, August died 5 Feb. 1929; close but not accurate.
Note:   In April, 1891 at the baptism of their eldest child Martha, August and Anastasia were living at 182 Superior St., Detroit, per St. Josephat Church records. In January, 1893 when their second daughte
