Notes
a. Note:   ridget did not use that name, but used Ann or variations of Ann - he listed her in his work as "Brigid (Ann)." I located Milton McLaughlin and his wife "Annie" in the 1880 PA census, living on Fleming Street in Pittsburgh (in Brighton Heights, near the McKees Rocks Bridge). I'm sure of the identification because Margaret "Hoolihan," Bridget/Annie's sister, was also living in the house. Annie gave her age as 32, making her year of birth 1847 or 48 rather than 1845 as in the 1850 census; this isn't the first time that age variations have found in the Houlihan family! She was born in Ireland, consistent with the 1850 census. She and husband Milton had 5 children living with them. Milton and Bridget/Annie McLaughlin again appear in the 1900 census in Pittsburgh, living at 355 Lytle St. in the Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh, exactly where J.J. Houlihan recalls their living. They'd been married 35 years and Bridget/Annie is shown as mother of 8, 5 of whom were still living at the time of the 1900 census. Bridget indicates that she immigrated in 1848 and had been in the US for 52 years; this is the first confirmation of a year of immigration of any Houlihan. Four children were living with them, 2 unmarried daughters Adeline (30) and Margaret (24) and 2 sons born after the 1880 census, Claud (18) and Walter (13). Bridget/Annie's sister, Margaret Houlihan Brady and her son Harry were no longer living with them, but 3 grandchildren and a son-in-law were: Florence and Hazel Shaw, ages 12 & 9, Bertha Boohimer (or Bookimer) age 9 and Archie Moffat, a 25 year old machinist, born in PA. Since there are 3 different last names involved, it's safe to assume that daughters Estella, Violet and Nellie were the 3 children deceased - they'd married men named Shaw, Boohimer and Moffat - and, given Archie Moffat's age and the ages of the 2 eldest daughters, it's also safe to assume that Nellie (b. 1878) had been married to Archie (b. 1875). The obituary of Annie McLaughlin appeared in the 6 Nov and 7 Nov 1906 "Pittsburgh Post Gazette," pg. 5 both days. It reads as follows: "On Monday Nov. 5, 1906 at 1 am Annie wife of Milton H., in her 62nd year. Funeral services at family residence 919 Greenfield Ave. Thursday at 2 pm." Like her husband, no church affiliation or place of interment is mentioned. The same obituary also appeared in the 6 Nov. 1906 edition of the "Pittsburgh Press;" no additional information was offered.
Note:   According to J.J. Houlihan, Bridget Ann Houlihan married Milton McLaughlin. They lived in the Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh at one time and were not Catholics. J.J. Houlihan apparently knew that B
