Notes
a. Note:   r and married sister in the late 1840's and was living with his parents in the 1850 census, Donegal Twp., Butler Co., PA. He apparently married in the late 1850's (probably in Butler or Armstrong Co., PA) and had likely 3 daughters, two of whom were shown in the 1860 census at Brady's Bend Twp., Armstrong Co., PA when his mother was also living with him; Richard was a day laborer and called "McCarty." [I think it likely that the daughter Margaret shown as age 10 in the 1870 census is the Mary shown as age 1 at the 1860 census; likely "Mary Margaret." Daughter Kate was born 1866 in Armstrong Co., per her marriage license application in 1892. His wife Hanorah/Honora died before the 1870 census when he was shown as a widower with two daughters, living with his sister Margaret and her husband, the Houlihans, in Union Township, Allegheny Co., PA. He was working as a coal miner like his brother-in-law, John Houlihan, and nephew, David Houlihan.
Richard married a second time, likely between the 1870 and 1880 censuses since he was no longer living with his sister's family at the time of the 1880 census and he did leave a widow at his death in 1899. In his 1962 genealogical work, J.J. Houlihan recalled that his younger daughter Kate was "adopted" by John & Margaret Houlihan, described as being the daughter of Dick McCarthy's first wife. J.J. Houlihan was apparently unaware of the elder daughter Margaret and we only learned about her in 2014 from a descendant.
Richard does not appear in the 1880 or 1900 Pennsylvania censuses and his whereabouts after that date have not yet been determined. A Richard McCarthy is listed in the 1880 Pittsburgh Directory living at Plum and 49th Sts.; this is in Lawrenceville and may be the right Richard. A Richard McCarthy is listed in the 1885 Pittsburgh Directory as a laborer, living on Dresden Ave near 54th. While Dresden Ave. does not exist today, 54th crosses Butler and is within a few blocks of Carnegie St. The 1895 Directory lists him at 5409 Dresden Ave., Pittsburgh, no occupation shown. (Richard's sister, Margaret McCarthy Houlihan, was living at 5119 Dresden when she died 7 Nov. 1887.) The 1896 Directory shows a Richard McCarthy, laborer, 5116 Butler St. and, at the same address, is a William McCarthy - believed to be Richard's nephew, son of his brother William - or, possibly, a son of Richard's second marriage). William's brother, Stephen, was living in Pittsburgh at 1900, so it's not surprising that more than one son of William McCarthy, Sr. may have moved to the city.
Pittsburgh Marriage License records are only available from 1885-1925. While I read the Pittsburgh Marriage License Registry index, I only located the marriage of Richard's nephew, Richard, lending credence to the thought that the senior Richard remarried before 1885.
I obtained burial information on Richard McCarthy from St. Mary's Cemetery, Pittsburgh as well as a death certificate. There's no doubt that this is the "right" Richard. While the death certificate lists his age as 56 and parents as "unknown," both he and his parents were born in Ireland. His residence address in the 18th ward of Pittsburgh puts him in the same few blocks where the Houlihans and Rawlins' (daughter Kate) lived. The cemetery gives his age as 66 which is within 2 years of the 1850 census information. He was married at his death, leaving a wife, Annie; he was a laborer and died of an abcess of the lung/hemorrhage. He was buried from St. Kieran's Church, 23 Nov. 1899 in Section N, lot 3, grave 1, St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville. I located an obituary in the "Pittsburgh Post Gazette" of Thursday, 23 Nov. 1899 while at the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh. It reads as follows: "On Tuesday Nov. 21, 1899 at 11:30 pm Richard McCarthy, aged 58. Funeral from his late residence Fifty fifth & Natrona Sts. today at 9:30 am. Services at St. Kieran's Church, 54th St. at 10 am."
On 18 April 1998, I visited St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh. While I was able to locate Section N, lot 3, there is no tombstone or any other marker for Richard or his wife. Various members of the Dunn family are buried in the plot, as are Richard's brothers William and John McCarthy, the latter's grave marked with a white stone, lying flat (see notes on John McCarthy). It is from this gravestone that we learn of the Co. Cork origins of the McCarthy family.

Note:   Richard McCarthy was the youngest son of Patrick and Catherine McCarthy and remained close to his older sister Margaret Houlihan during much of his life. He likely immigrated with his parents, brothe
