His place of birth is listed as Ohio. His parents are shown as being born in Germany, as were those of his wife. His occupation is shown as "laborer in steel works." He is listed in the 1895 Pittsburgh Directory as a boilermaker, the same occupation as his brothers Fred, Jr. and Charles. He was living at 259 37th St., Pittsburgh. At the 1900 census he was still living at 259 37th St., Pittsburgh in a rented home, occupation: boilermaker. He had married a second time after the death of his first wife and had 7 children in total. He and wife Anna are shown in the 1920 census with 5 adult children all living at home - Catherine 32, George, 29, Joseph, Jr., 26, William, 21 and daughter Celia Mitchel, 36. Again, Joseph's birthplace is shown as Ohio, this time specifically Cincinnati. According to the "Guttendorf Family Tree," Joseph Guttendorf died in 1926 and is buried at St. Augustine Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
