Notes
a. Note:   s listed as farmer. He was 30 years old and unmarried.
At the 1860 census, William McCarthy was married to Rosean/Roseanna and had 3 young children. He was a laborer, living in Madison Township, Clarion Co., PA which is just north of Armstrong Co., and northeast of Butler Co. Also living with them was a 61 year old couple, Moses and Gracia Henry, both Irish-born. I believe it's likely that they were the parents of Roseanne.
By the 1870 census, William and Roseanne were living in Brady's Bend Township, Armstrong Co., PA. Brady's Bend is a town mentioned several times by J.J. Houlihan as being the home of his ancestors. I have now located William & Dennis McCarthy (d. 1854) and John Houlihan there, as well as Jane McCarthy, widow of William's brother Dennis (d. 1855); brother Richard McCarthy was living there at the 1860 census with his wife and two small daughters. Brady's Bend is just across the county line from Butler Co. and near Donegal Township where the McCarthy's first settled. The last name was spelled "McCarty" in this record. William's occupation was an "ore miner" and 7 children were living in the home. His personal estate was valued at $100.
(Brady's Bend was named for Captain Samuel Brady, an Indian fighter. The Great Western Iron Works opened there in 1839 and the town boomed for 40 years afterwards, with 40 blast furnaces working simultaneously at its prime.]
At the 1880 census, William and Roseanne were still living in Brady's Bend, Armstrong Co., PA. The last name is spelled "Mc Cartchy" in the census index. Daughter Catherine is gone from the home (at 23/24, she'd likely married) and 2 more children have been born. Williams' occupation is shown as laborer; son Cornelius/"Con" was working for the railroad. Just after this census, William must have removed to New Castle, Lawrence Co., as his 1889 death certificate states that he lived in New Castle prior to moving to Pittsburgh 8 years prior to his death; it was apparently a short stay there.
In about 1881, William moved to Pittsburgh where he died 27 Feb. 1889 of double pneumonia. His funeral was held at St. Mary's Church, Pittsburgh and he was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Section N Lot 3, along with his brothers John & Richard. According to his death certificate, he was married, a painter, and a resident of Harrison St. between 48th & 49th Sts., Pittsburgh for 8 years. He was 60 years old at his death. On 18 April 1998 I visited St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh and visited Section N, Lot 3. The only McCarthy tombstone is that of John McCarthy, elder brother of William and Richard. No other McCarthy memorials are erected here. I was able to locate an obituary of William McCarthy in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette of 1 March 1889, however it is illegible on the microfilm due to poor film quality and the newspaper being filmed was also ripped right through the death notice. It is just possible to read his name and St. Mary's on the copy.
Note:   At the time of the 1850 census, William McCarthy was living with his parents and four brothers, his sister and brother-in-law and their children in Donegal Township, Butler Co., PA. His occupation i
