Notes
a. Note:   s as an 7 year old, living with her parents and siblings in Clearfield Township, Butler Co, PA.. She next appears in the 1860 census there as at age 16, still living with her family. Her occupation is listed as "domestic."
Catherine's father died in the early 1860's and the family moved to Pittsburgh before 1864; this is confirmed by an 1864 Butler land sale by her mother, Rosanna Dougan, where she is recorded as being a resident of Pittsburgh. I have been unable to locate her mother Rosanna and Catherine's siblings there as yet. This was about the same time that Catherine married Charles Gallagher. At the 1870 census Catherine and Charles were living in Pittsburgh where Charles was a grading contractor. Catherine was 27 and had 3 children by this time. It's not yet known whether Catherine was married in Butler county or in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
Catherine Dougan Gallagher was apparently known as "Kate", the name shown in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. She was about 9 years younger than her husband. In the 1880 census her occupation was listed as "keeps house." She could neither read nor write English. She is shown as being born in PA of parents born in Ireland, although it's been confirmed that both parents were actually born in Pennsylvania.
At the 1900 census, Catherine/Kate Dugan Gallagher was a widow, renting a home at 19 Wilson St., Pittsburgh. Two unmarried sons were living with her, Charles and Bernard. Her date of birth is listed as March, 1846 making her about 4 years younger than indicated in the 1870 & 1880 censuses. She said her parents were both born in PA, different than what she'd said in the prior census (her sister also reported both parents having been born in PA). It indicates that she can read and speak English, but not write it. It also shows that she was the mother of 12, only 3 of which were living at the time of the census (Charles, Bernard and John C.)! Even accounting for some Irish exaggeration, this is difficult to understand - we know that she was about 22 when John C. was born and that she'd buried 2 grown sons by 1900 (James and Henry); there was a 6 year span between sons James and Bernard, the youngest, when she may have had stillborn children or miscarriages. But to have had 10 such instances is terribly unfortunate and almost difficult to believe.
According to her obituary in the Pittsburgh Press of 24 October 1901and her death certificate, Catherine Dougan Gallagher died Wednesday morning, 23 October 1901 at 1:30 of spinal sclerosis; Calvary cemetery records indicate that she died of "spinal meningitis." She was the widow of Charles Gallagher and daughter of Peter and Rose "Dugan." Whoever provided the death certificate information was not accurate, however, stating that Peter Dugan, her father, was born in Pittsburgh (we know he was born in Butler Co.), while her mother was listed as born in Butler (which we believe to be true but, as yet, have no proof.) Similarly, cemetery records indicate that she was born in Pittsburgh, although we know she was born in Butler county, PA. Her last residence is stated to have been 55 Logan (perhaps 33 Logan, residence of her daughter), Pittsburgh where she lived for 5 months; her prior address was 19 Wilson, Pittsburgh, both in the 8th ward. The funeral was held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Margaret) McRoberts at 33 Logan St., Pittsburgh on 25 October; the requiem mass was held at St. Paul's Cathedral. Catherine Gallagher was buried in grave 2, lot 346, Section F. of Calvary Cemetery, along with her husband, her mother and two sons, James & Henry. She died 11 days after her son John died in Liverpool, England. On 19 April 1998 I visited this burial plot and found no tombstones or markers of any sort.
[In 1894, Catherine Dugan Gallagher purchased several cemetery plots at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA - graves 1-6, lot 346, Section F. Her address at the time was 105 Webster Avenue, Pittsburgh. She buried her mother, Rose Dougan, there in March, 1895 (grave 3), her husband in May, 1895 (grave 1), sons James and Henry in 1894 & 1898 respectively (grave 4).]
Note:   Catherine "Duggan" was baptized May 4, 1843 at St. Patrick's Church, Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong Co, PA, daughter of Peter "Dugan" and Rosanna Seymour. Catherine "Dugan" appears in the 1850 censu
