Note: urgh. He was working as a day laborer. His year of birth is shown as 1881 rather than 1879, but we tend to believe the earlier date as he was counted as an infant in the 1880 census. FX Houlihan tells us that Bernard sailed to England in 1901 to retrieve the body of his brother, John C., who'd died there. If true, he may have accompanied John Brickley, undertaker (see Notes: John C. Gallagher). Bernard is buried in grave 6, lot 346, Section F of Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Cemetery records show his age at death to have been 31 and that he died of valvular heart disease. On 19 April 1998 I visited this burial plot and found no tombstones.
Note: We know little about Bernard Gallagher. John J. Houlihan tells us that he never married. He is listed in the 1900 census living with his mother Catherine and brother Charles at 19 Wilson St., Pittsb
