a. Note:   cupation was listed as "engine builder." At the 1860 census, he was still listed as an engine builder, living with his wife and now 4 children. At the 1870 census, John was living in the 11th ward of Pittsburgh, with the same wife and 4 children. His occupation was now shown as "machinist" and son James, a laborer. John was 45 years old.
  John J. McFarren is buried at St. Mary's cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh in Lot 30, Section B along with his wife, parents, and others. He was 74 at his death from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried from St. Bridget's Church, Pittsburgh. No tombstone marks his grave or any of the McFarrens buried there. There is no record of a will in the Pittsburgh Estate Index for James McFarren.
  The death certificate of daughter Jane/Jennie says that he was born in Philadelphia; while not yet proven, JJ Houlihan had known that the family immigrated through Philadelphia and he may have been born there.
Note:   John McFarren is the son of James & Mary Alice who appears in the 1840 census record as a boy 15<20 years of age. By the 1850 census, he had married Bridget and had 2 children, Jane and James. His oc
