Family tradition states that Reuben (Joseph) Moore was born in Northern Ireland about 1740. However, other information indicates that he was born in Orange County, Virginia. (Note of Louise McClelland) His family all lived on Linley Creek near Newmarket, VA, Shenandoah County. They were Quakers and slave owners. Reuben I, was wealthy and at his death about 1819 left most of his estate to his oldest son, Reuben. The estate being principally about seven miles of land along the Shenandoah River in Shenandoah County (?), which was a Lord Halifax grant from the English Government.
Reuben, Jr. remained in Virginia on the land received from his father. George received a very fair upland farm from his father.
Strother (my grandfather, whm) married Mary Katherine Haynie in 1823. His father left him a mountain farm which at the time was considered hardly worth taxes. He left home shortly after his father's death somewhat incensed that he had received such a small portion of his father's estate. In addition to being a farmer he also was engaged in the tanning business while in Virginia. In 1835, Strother Moore bought a farm near Middletown, VA. On this property was a large stone house, built over a spring, that was built before the Revoluntionary War, which he sold when he and his entire family came to Missouri in 1854. He settled in Chariton County, about nine miles north of Brunswick on Salt Creek, where he purchased a farm of 640 acres. At the time there were hardly any fences between his farm and the Iowa line. It was customary to graze live stock on the open range. Strother and Mary Katherine were the parents of ten children.
