Notes
a. Note:   THINGS THAT I REMEMBER ABOUT THE HISTORY OF MY FAMILY BY AVIS MARIE (BARRETT) METCALF MARCH 1994
"Until Grandma [Emily "Emma"] died, Aunt Bertha was a seamstress, specializing in wedding dresses, mostly handmade. She also cooked for awhile in a logging camp at Noti [Ore.]. She never married because the man she was engaged to jilted her and married her best friend... In later years she had a lunch counter at Gray's Feed Store that used to be on Park Street in Eugene... She catered to business people in the area. I worked with her many times. She opened up at 9 a.m. and left at 4 p.m. She had a good business and her food was the best. She made "stick" horses using inner tubes and also inner tube elephants. In later years she worked in Dad's [Kenneth Barrett (1896)] greenhouses. For a number of years she had a stall in the Farmer's Public Market and sold bedding plants and vegetable plants that Dad grew. When Grandpa [Arthur Barrett] had the greenhouses on 15th she made up 5 or 6 "Cecil Bruner" corsages for him to take to his lady friends at church."
"After Grandma Barrett died Aunt Bertha moved in to keep house for Grandpa."
"Aunt Bertha had her sewing machine in front of the dining room windows on the south side of the house."
"Aunt Bertha bought a Pontiac Roadster in 1929 and Aunt Mary's boys took turns trying to teach her to drive. She never did learn... She always managed to get someone to drive her where ever she wanted to go." _______________________ 1910 Lane Co., Ore.
