Notes
a. Note:   THINGS THAT I REMEMBER ABOUT THE HISTORY OF MY FAMILY BY AVIS MARIE (BARRETT) METCALF MARCH 1994
"Mom [Avis (Thompson] Barrett] went to the University of Oregon for 1 year. She studied Business Administration. At that time, as I recall, there were 2 buildings, Deady Hall and Villard Hall. They are both on 11th Street at Franklin Blvd. (where the railroad tracks used to be). ___________________________________________________________ The Register-Guard, Eugene, Lane Co., Ore., March 11, 1954, Front page: Woman Dies in Fire Laid to Cigarette
A Glenwood woman died Wednesday afternoon in flames which resulted in only minor damage to her home.
Avis T. Barrett, 56, perished shortly after 2 p.m. when flames burst from a daveno she was sleeping on in her home at 4690 Franklin Blvd.
A man driving a truck loaded with caskets saw Mrs. Barrett standing in the window of the flaming room and rushed to her aid with his truck's fir extinguisher, but the heat kept him back.
CALLS FOR HELP He was Bob Dailey, driver for the Puget Sound Casket Co. of Tacoma. He called to Mrs. Jerry Hermonson, a neighbor, for help as he ran into the house. Heat prevented, Mrs. Hermanson from opening the door. Dailey broke the window beside the daveno and Mrs. Barrett reached through with one arm but then fell back.
Mrs. Barrett, a native of the area, had fallen recently and one arm was in a cast.
Fire chief Ed Surfus, whose crews extinguished the flames, and Mrs. Barrett apparently had gone to sleep with a cigarette in her hand. It later fell on the daveno, igniting it and a curtain behind it.
HUSBAND AT WORK Husband Kenneth Barrett was at work, at Chase Gardens, at the time. Son Leslie, a senior at Eugene High, was in school.
Other survivors are sons, Kenneth Jr. of Springfield, Raymond, in the service, and Rodney of Eugene; daughters, Mrs. Lyle Metcalf of Springfield, and Crystal of Texas; sisters, Mrs. Grace Stevens of Springfield and Alma Castle of Bremerton; brothers Earl Thompson of Springfield and Floyd D. Thompson of Salem.
Many nieces, nephews and grandchildren live in the local area.
Chief Surfus estimated damage to the home at "about $1,500." He said crews, were able to extinguish the fire with water carried on the truck. A Springfield fire crew also went to the scene.
Services had not been arranged by Thursday noon. __________________________________________________ Lane Memorial Gardens, Eugene, Lane Co., Ore. - inscription:
