Notes
a. Note:   From David Paulsen:
Delphinia's father Hiram Lee, ran a stagecoach stop called Nodaway House, named after Nodaway County. 16 wagons of Lee's and Emerson's including Delphina's parents Hiram and Elizabeth left for the West Coast across the plains towards Oregon. (Oregon Trail). When they arrived at the Oregon border, the different families split up. Some went to Idaho, some to Oregon, California, and Washington. Benjamin and Delphinia moved on to Jacksonville, Oregon to mine for gold. The family made enough to start over after their loss from the civil war. Disaster struck the family of Benjamin Emerson during an epidemic of Diptheria. Two of their boys, Leoanallen and John, died within four days of each other from the illness. They are buried in the Jacksonville, Oregon cemetery. Delphinia who was pregnant at the time of the epidemic did not sleep for 4 days in a gallant attempt to save her children. The unborn child was miscarried as a result of her attempts to save the other two children. The doctor gave her medication to help her sleep after the ordeal. Before taking the medication she told her husband Benjamin to be sure and wake her up after 8 hours as she was afraid she would never wake up.
Delphinia had twelve children and outlived all but two, Leon and Albin. She also adopted Will A. Emerson, the child of her son Edward Emerson. The mother of Will is unknown. At the age of 65 she took in her son Leon's three daughters and raised them after Leon's wife, Henrietta Mabel died in 1902. Leon traveled and worked in various jobs, but when Delphinia heard that Leon was gambling with the Mexicans on the railroad, she sent him away, as she felt he would be a bad influence on his children. Eventually he returned to help her when she was unable to take care of herself. Leon's daughter, Hattie Opal Emerson Brown moved in with them and she and her daughters Mildred, Lorna, and Ruth helped take care of Delphinia. _______________________ 1930 Lane Co., Ore.   Delphinia Catherine Lee was born at Quitman, Missouri April 17, 1845. On May 9, 1861, she married Benjamin W. Emerson, a volunteer soldier from the state of Missouri. On April 9, 1863, they left Missouri in her father's wagon train drawn by oxen and crossed the plains without any serious mishap, arriving at Hone [Honey?] Lake Vallep on September 5, 1863 where they wintered. [Honey Lake is south of Susanville at an elevation of about 4000 feet - an unlikely place to winter.)
In the spring, her father moved on to the present location [Latham] which he purchased a year later, 1865, she and her husband coming as far as Jacksonville where they purchased a small home and lived until 1879. To this union twelve children were born, two of whom survive; L.C. Emerson of Cottage Grove and A.S. Emerson of Santa Ana, California. A foster son, also of Santa Ana, survives. Surviving also are sixteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and thirteen great, great grandchildren. ___________________________ Oregon Death Index, 1903-1998:
