Notes
a. Note:   From a letter from Charles V. Gates to Euleta (Deming) Allison - Aug 10, 1975:
"We have no records of the other four uncles or aunts. Some of them might have stayed in Iowa City. All of those listed were born in Johnson County, Iowa City, and all of those listed came to Oregon, either by boat with grandpa (Daniel Goetz) or individually in emigrant trains across the plains. My father, John Gates, left Iowa City in 1863 at the age of 17, and drove freight wagon across the plains. He associated with Buffalo Bill. I recall my dad having cousins that also came to Oregon. In 1870 my grandad changed his name from Goetz to Gates, which is recorded in the Lane County, Oregon, courthouse at Eugene, in that year." ___________________ Letter from Carl Goetz, Iowa City, Iowa to Euleta (Deming) Allison - about 1976: Daniel Goetz owned a farm between Bon Accord and the St. Stanislaus Church.

James T. Brown Seal Recorded Sept. 30, 1871, 1:00 P.M., W. J. Huff, Recorder. ________________________ From Euleta (Deming) Allison: Daniel Goetz emigrated to Oregon with his wife (because of Mary's bad health after 14 children) and a good portion of his children by boat around Cape Horn, South America and landed in San Francisco. (Part of the family came overland) Mary died in San Francisco and was buried where Gold Gate Park is now. The bodies were moved to other cemeteries in this area when the Park was in the making. Mary's mother, Mary "Grannie Fay" was accompanying them to Oregon and came on to Oregon with Daniel and raised her daughter's younger children. Joseph, the youngest, was six when they reached Oregon. _____________________________________ Daniel bought land in Crow, Lane Co., Ore. 17 June 1870 as Daniel Goetz and sold the land 7 July 1871 as Daniel Gates. Euleta (Deming) Allison was often been called by Title and Escrow Companies to verify that Daniel Goetz and Daniel Gates were indeed the same person. The land he bought in 1870 was 320 acres at Crow, Lane Co., Ore. from James L. Jamison and Barbara Jamison. This was part of a "land claim donated by the United States Government to Hiram C. Rowe and Flora Rowe" as stated in the deed.
The Gates Cemetery on the hill in Crow, Lane Co., Ore. is on the old Daniel Gates place which became the Joseph Gates place. __________________________________________________________________________ _ When the Gates Cemetery was first started, Herman Anlauf, husband of Theresia Knebel, said that it should be strictly a Catholic Cemetery. Mary Fay, known as "Granny Fay", was a Lutheran, however, so Henry Gates asked, "Well, what about Granny."
Herman replied, "Oh, she can be buried just over the fence." At this point, Henry promptly knocked him down.
Mary Fay IS buried in the Gates Cemetery, Crow, Lane Co., Ore.
The above was told to Barbara (Peterson) Buchholz by her grandfather, George Gates, in 1973. __________________________________________________________________________ __ The Gates, Rauch and Knebel families all came out west together. They came overland to San Francisco, Cal. but went to Portland, Ore. by boat. The Rauch and Knebel families were Daniel's married daughters.
Told to Barbara (Peterson) Buchholz by her grandfather, Geoge Gates, Jan. 24, 1976. __________________________________________________________________________ ___ It is known that Daniel and Mary Goetz/Gates had 14 children with Joseph Gates being the youngest. We have the names of 10 children. Dora (Gates) Diess told Euleta (Deming) Allison that she was sure the other children died in infancy in Iowa. There are spaces between the 10 where other children could fit. Charles VanValaine "Charlie" Gates' mother, told him that his middle name "VanValaine" was after a dead uncle in Iowa. That is why in recent years, VanValaine was added as a child even though we have no other information on him. ____________________________________________________ 1850 Johnson Co., Iowa Census, District No. 9 in Liberty Twp., taken 26 Aug 1850 [Ancestry.com, Washington Twp., Image #13]:
