Those celebrating Christmas with Mrs. Gates were: Ollie Miller of Bremerton, Washington, Hazel, Lawrence and Leonard Hayens (sic), Virgil, Maggie and Mike Bowman, Clark Spencer, Bill Smith, Ancel, Nellie, Mary and Wayne Smith; Delbert, Arlene an Lenard Farmer of Tacoma, Washington; Henry, Tom, Dan, Pearl an Roland Weisbeck, Martin Glass, Elsie and Kenneth Carney of Oakridge; Al Fisk, wife, and children, Mr. an Mrs. Jim Fisk and family; John Gates; Mr. and Mrs. Soren Karlsen of Monmouth, Bob Slawson and Charlie Gates of Eureka, California. This reunion was the first reunion in the Gates family for ten years. There were 39 for the Christmas dinner. ___________ Easter 1943: Gates Clan Reunion Held in Veneta CROW - (Special) - Reunion of the Gates clan was held at the home of Mary Gates in Veneta on Easter Sunday. Those present included Belle Smith, Lower Wolf Creed; Thomas Gates, Eugene; Frances Watkins, Horace Watkins, Seattle, Wash.; Annie Pullman, Bremerton, Wash.; Maggie Bowman, Eugene; Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Gates, Daniel Gates, Crow Stage; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Carney, Jerry Carney, Oakridge; Mr. and Mrs. Ansel Smith, Orlen and Delbert Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Briggs, route 3; Ettie Fisk and Billy Fisk, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Fisk, Allen Jr., Jackie Fisk, all of Veneta; Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Weisbeck, route 3; Charlie Nicklin, Eugene; Dorothy Pearson, Beverly Pearson, of Seattle. _________________ Probably May 1943: Fires Leave One Dead, One Injured Fire has struck twice in three days in Lane county, leaving one person dead and one seriously burned. Mrs. Mary Gates of Veneta, 87, is in serious condition at Sacred Heart hospital, where she was received Tuesday morning. Living alone, she is some way caught fire to her clothing and is badly burned about the body. Note: Her death certificate lists cause of death as 1st and 2nd degree burns. _____________________________________________________ The Register-Guard, Eugene, Lane Co., Ore., May 20, 1943, p 13: GATES - Mrs. Mary E. Gates, Veneta, died in Eugene May 19, at the age of 87 years. She was born in Yreka, Calif., Dec. 23, 1855 and came to this community with her parents 85 years ago. She was the mother of Belle Smith, Rt 5 Eugene; Frances Watkins, Seattle, Wn.; Annie Pullman, Bremerton, Wn.; Thomas Gates, Eugene; Maggie Bowman, Eugene; Daniel Gates, Crow Stage Rt., Eugene; Ettie Fisk, Junction City; Henry Gates, Eugene; Pearl Weisbeck, Veneta; Eva Hartwig, Gervais, Ore.; and Charles Gates, San Luis Obispo, also 19 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held on Sat., May 22, at 1:30 p.m. in the Gates cemetery with Rev. Walter J. Fiscus officiating and the Branstetter-Simon chapel in charge. ________________ Mrs. Mary E. Survivors include four sons, Thomas and Henry Gates of Eugene, Daniel, Crow Stage Route, and Charles of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; seven daughters, Mrs. Pearl Weisbeck, Veneta; Mrs. Belle Smith, Route 5, Eugene; Mrs. Maggie Bowman, Eugene; Mrs. Ettie Fisk, Junction City; Mrs. Eva Hartwig, Gervais; Mrs. Frances Watkins of Seattle, and Mrs. Annie Pullman of Bremerton, Wash.; also a half-sister, Mrs. Sarah Hemenway, Eugene; 33 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in the Gates cemetery, Rev. Walter J. Fiscus officiating.
