Notes
a. Note:   About 1894 Pearl Gates and three of her children and her sister-in- law, Addie Gates, and five of her children were going on a narrow road (Wolf Creek Road) in a wagon when they met Ans Hunnicutt. Pearl's wagon upset while they were trying to pass and turned completely over. Pearl held the wagon up off the children. Pearl's left arm was broken just below the elbow and soon blood poisoning set in and her arm had to be removed just below the elbow. Two of the boys received bloody noses. Euleta's mother always said that her Aunt Pearl saved the children from probably quite a disaster if maybe not death. She always marveled at the things Pearl would do with this little stub as there never seemed to be anything she wasn't capable of. She said that she would never forget Pearl in the hop yards.
Dora said what she remembered more than anything else was having to go to Aunt Addies' to get her hair cut because her mother couldn't comb her hair while she was injured. ---- Obtained from Dora (Gates) Diess and Euleta (Deming) Allison. _____________________________________________ The Register Guard, Eugene, Ore., March 18, 1945, p 5:
