Note: Cottage Grove Sentinel Gates Raised Family, Helped Run Business by Thelma Gates for The Sentinel Estella Barrett Gates was born in Eugene, on July 27, 1882. She was a daughter of Arthur C. Barrett and Emma J. Linebaugh Barrett. Emma's father and mother, Joseph and Elizabeth Linebaugh, came to Cottage Grove about 1886. Estella's father had a greenhouse and nursery near the present Oregon State Police Office in Eugene and raised a large truck garden where the Black Angus Restaurant stands by the Willamette River. George Gates was a bookkeeper at Broder Brother's Meat Market in Eugene, and learned the butchering trade from them. Estella worked at her sister Effie's Restaurant. Estella and George were married Feb. 28, 1912. They homesteaded in Canada for a few years, then returned to the Crow area, where they homesteaded a farm at Hadleyville. On July 3, 1925, George and Estella opened a meat market in Cottage Grove. Estella worked in the market afternoons and Saturdays, waiting on customers. She could cut round steaks and pork chops as well as a man, and this was with a knife, hand saw and a meat cleaver, as no electric meat saws were made then. In the winter of 1927, Main Street was flooded and people rowed boats down the street to the businesses. The Gates family home stood where the present Safeway Market is now. They had a barn, kept a cow, chickens, and rabbits, and raised a large garden. It was there they raised their family, Juanita, Agnes, Wayne, Melba, and Helen, who all helped in various ways with the family business. Estella combined homemaking and working in the market. She was a friendly lady who enjoyed people. She was an excellent cook and there was always room for one more at her table. On Saturday nights after closing the market at 9 p.m., George and Estella and family would enjoy dancing the polka, schottische and other dances at the Masonic Hall or the grange hall. They had the meat market on Main Street from 1925 until 1950, when George retired and Wayne continued the business on Gowdyville Road until he passed away in April 1984. Wayne and Thelma's son, Jerry and his wife Sandra are keeping the family business going at Gatesway Meat Co. on Highway 99 North. _____________________________________________________________ Applegate Pioneer Museum, Veneta, Lane Co., Ore., Scrapbook #33, p 8: GATES - Estella Hazel Gates of 332 North āJā Street, Cottage Grove, passed away at the Cottage Grove Hospital on Monday, October 20, 1958 at the age of 66.
