Notes
a. Note:   West-Lane News, Veneta, Lane Co., Ore., Sep. 1, 1988: Heartline provides independence plus safety BY PATRICIA KURTH For the News
CROW--Bertha Bloom, Agnes Gates, Ann Lenart and Mae Swinney share long-time residency in the West-Lane area.
They raised families and have grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
They are independent, determined to remain in their homes as long as possible -- a resolve enhanced by the Heartline "help" button each wears at home in a locket on a chain necklace.
Each necklace is priceless -- a potential lifesaver.
In an emergency, the "help" button can be pushed, signaling a Heartline machine on the telephone to dial Sacred Heart Hospital.
In turn, Sacred Heart's Heartline operator will summon help -- either a neighbor/friend/relative responder, or an ambulance.
The system worked for 91-year-old Swinney, a Crow resident for the past 37 years.
"I got up one morning and I couldn't get my breath," Swinney recalled. "I have my unit and telephone right next to my bed.
"I buzzed them and the girl came on and said, 'Mae, do you need help?'"
"If I don't get help, I'm going to be on the floor," was Swinney's answer.
The Heartline operator was still conversing with Swinney when a Crow Valley Fire Department rescue rig rolled into the driveway. Volunteers Pat Waggener and Lynn Burch provided oxygen until the ambulance arrived.
Even Swinney was surprised by all the attention. "I said, 'My lands! Am I going to get a ride in this new ambulance?'" she said, still marveling.
After the tests at the Eugene Clinic, Swinney returned home. But a second spell that day put her back in Sacred Heart's emergency room.
Her doctor prescribed medication for shortness of breath, and Swinney was on her way.
"I haven't had to go back, except for check-ups," she said confidently.
One of many "Blooms of Crow," 84 year-old Bertha Bloom boasts 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and no Heartline emergencies.
But the machine is there just the same, enabling Bloom to reside independently on Bloom Hill without causing her many successors undue worry.
Prompted by Crow Grange member Frances Cooper, Bloom received her Heartline machine through the grange.
Despite her apparent good health, Bloom takes nothing for granted and keeps her "help" button close at hand.
"I never go anywhere without it," she said.
Ruth Teafatiller, also of the Crow Grange, encouraged 77-year-old Agnes Gates to subscribe to the Heartline program. Gates' son agreed to the idea, and now [h]is mother is a user.
Sort of. In the nearly two years she's had the machine, Gates hasn't had an emergency. But if one were to arise, her grandson or Frances Cooper would be summoned by the Heartline monitor.
Her machine also is supplied by the grange, through donations made to its Heartline project.
Ann Lenart, 65, loves the great outdoors. For many years, she and her late husband operated a logging business, and his death several years ago has not reduced her time outside.
Lenart said she got her Heartline machine primarily because of those hours spent outdoors, stacking wood and taking long walks to the mailbox. The "help" button is her constant companion.
West-Lane residents receive quick first-response medical attention from one of several fire departments by dialing 911. As the fire department is dispatched, so is an ambulance.
All four Heartline users subscribe also to the FireMed service offered by the Eugene and Springfield fire departments. For $35 per year, they receive unlimited ambulance service for medical emergencies.
But the Heartline "help" buttons provide security for elderly people who may not be able to reach a telephone in an emergency. That's why many find the likes of Ruth Teafatiller and Frances Cooper on their doorsteps -- determined to recruit then as Heartline subscribers for their won good.
Once a subscriber has a Heartline unit, the service fee is $10 per month. However, if the subscriber cannot afford that amount, the fee is covered by the Sacred Heart Foundation.
A nursing home employee, Teafatiller knows first hand how important a Heartline unit can be to a subscriber and his or her family.
"Families are pleased to know we have them available," she said. ___________________________________________________ The Eugene Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore., May 17, 1996, 6B: Agnes Gates
