Note: CENSUS DATA: The federal census of 1830, Laurens Dist., SC, shows a William Gamble with the following family members: Males- under 5=2; 5-9=1; 10-14=1; 15-19=1; 20-29=1 ; 30-39=0; 40-49=1; 50-59=0; 60-69=0. Females- under 5=1; 5-9=0; 10-14=1;15-19=0; 20-29=1; 30-39=0; 40-49=0; 50-59=0; 60-69=2. COMMENTARY ON 1830 CENSUS : Whether this William Gamble is our ancestor is not know with certainty. However, a number of famiilies are shown living nearby William whose names are closely connected with our Gamble line. Examples: 1.A Nancy Finney is shown heading a household just a few doors away from this William Gamble in 1830. We know that Nancy Munford was the wife of John Finney, who died circa 1825 in Laurens Dist., SC. It is probable that this Nancy Finney is the widow of John Finney and the mother of William's wife, Mary. 2.A James Adair family is shown living just 5 doors away from William Gamble in 1830. We know that William first married Martha Adair, whose father was named James. It is possible that this James Adair is the father of Williams first wife, Martha Adair. 3.A David Gamble is shown living next door to the Nancy Finney noted in 1 above and just a short distance from William in the 1830 census. We know that William had a half brother named David and that he married Anna Finney, daughter of James and Nancy Munford Finney. It is possible that this David Gamble is the half brother of our William Gamble. CONCLUSION: It therefore is quite probable that the William Gamble shown in the 1830 census noted above is our ancestor. CENSUS DATA: The federal census of 1840, Talladega Co., AL, shows a William Gamble with the following family members: Males- under 5=2; 5-9=0; 10-14=1; 15-19=2; 20-29=0 ; 30-39=0; 40-49=0; 50-59=1; 60-69=0. Females- under 5=1; 5-9=1; 10-14=1;15-19=0; 20-29=1; 30-39=1; 40-49=0; 50-59=0; 60-69=1. CENSUS DATA: The federal census of 1850, Talladega Co., AL, Talladega Dist., taken 5 December 1850 shows William Gamble, age 65, farming and born SC. Living with him were Mary, wife, age 46, born SC; George M., son, age 24, working as a physician; born SC; John B., son, age 20, a student, born SC; Frances R., dau., age 11, born AL; Lucretia, dau., age 5, born AL; and Mary L., dau., age 4. Also living in the household were Nancy Finney (Mary's mother), age 79, born SC and Elizabeth Dillard, age 73, born SC. Elizabeth Dillard is William's half sister, widow of William? Dillard. NOTE ON 1850 CENSUS DATA: Based on the birth date & location of William and Mary's children, it would appear that the William Gamble family moved from South Carolina through Georgia to Alabama sometimes between 1830 & 1837. ASSUMPTION: Since three of William and Mary Finney Gamble's children (George Marion, John Bluford/Bluxford and Frances Rozene) married Bonners, an old-line established Carroll Co., GA family, it seems probable that the William Gamble family spent some time in Carroll Co., GA during their move to Alabama from SC. Also, their daughter, Frances Rozene Gamble, was shown in the 1860 census as born in GA. However, other census records note an AL birth location. ------------------------------------ COMMENT RELATED TO THE CONFUSION REGARDING THE FOUR JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE'S: Note that WILLIAM GAMBLE named one of his children JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE. This JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE then named one of his children JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, JR. WILLIAM GAMBLE'S son and grandson, JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, SR. and JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, JR. eventually moved to and lived a portion of their lives in Tallapoosa Co., AL in and around the Hackneyville community. Note earlier that JOHN GAMBLE, a half-brother to WILLIAM GAMBLE, named one of his children JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE. This JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE in turn named one of his children JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, JR. JOHN GAMBLE's son and grandson, JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, SR. and JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE, JR. also moved to and lived a portion of their lives in Tallapoosa Co., AL in and around the New Site community. The Hackneyville and New Site communities are in close proximity to one another, not more than 20 miles apart. These four JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE'S living in such close proximity created considerable confusion for family members in tracing their lineage. It appears that WILLIAM GAMBLE'S and JOHN GAMBLE'S sons and grandsons named JAMES ANDERSON GAMBLE were in fact first cousins, and the great grandsons of JAMES GAMBLE of Duncan Creek, Laurens District, South Carolina.
