Carroll Co., GA records, Deed Book C., p. 238, show Robert McAlister bought land from Gillis I. Adams on 20 November 1835. The land was part of land lot # 197, 10th district, that lies west of Buck Creek. The land tract lies south of U. S. Highway 27, between Carrollton and Bremen, GA. The land purchase was attested by: Otho P. Beall and Lawson Homes. No records have been found at this time showing his sale of this land. 2. Carroll Co., GA records, Deed Book F., p. 83, show Robert McCallister attested a land sale where Andrew J. Buttram sold Archibald McKissick 202 1/2 acres of land lot # 337, 7th district, on 7 March, 1848. 3. Carroll Co., GA records show Robert McColister paid taxes on land lot 197, 10th dist. (202 1/2 acres) in 1841 and 1842. ------------------------------------------------------------ DATE OF MOVE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA TO GEORGIA: The exact date Robert and Sarah McCollister moved from Anderson District, SC to Carroll Co., GA is not known at this time; however, it is probable that they made the move before the reading of the Will of Robert's brother, Andrew McAlister, Jr., on March 28, 1829. (See Will notes below and in the notes for Andrew McAlister, Jr.) Further, Robert McCollister was not found in the Anderson District census in 1830, neither was he found in the 1830 Georgia census. Also grave marker, obituary, and newspaper records show that Robert and Sarah's son, Thomas, was born in 1832 in Carroll Co., GA. NOTE: The birthdate of Robert and Sarah's McAlister/McCollister 4th child, Mary, (before March 28, 1829) is based on census information and information from the Will of Andrew McAlister, Jr. (Mary's uncle), that was dated March 28, 1829. In that Will, the four children of his brother Robert are mentioned specifically by name, i.e., Elizabeth, Andrew, Syrena Emaline, and Mary, validating that Mary was born before March 28, 1829. The Will of Andrew McAlister, Jr. also provides ample proof that Robert McAlister/McCollister's was the son of Andrew McAlister, Sr. and Mary Ann Service of Anderson District, S.C. and the brother of Andrew, Jr. (See full transcription of this Will under Andrew McAlister, Jr.'s information.) ------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Robert McAlister purchased land and house in 1857 in Columbus, GA The following is a full transcription of an indentured deed between John A. Jones and Alexander J. Robinson and Robert McAlister/McCollister executed in 1857 in Muscogee Co. Ga. The transcription was made from a copy of the original document by Lanny Gamble, a gg-grandson of Robert McAlister/ McCollister. NOTE: The transcriber attempted to format the transcribed deed as near to the original form as possible. Only a few periods were added to enhance the readability of the document. Question marks were inserted at points where the original text was too difficult to interpret. Dixon, Notary PublicRecorded Feburary ____" ------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTES RELATED TO SARAH AND ROBERT'S DEATH DATES: Robert McCollister's death date is based on a newspaper article reported in the 12 Jan. 1858 issue of Sexton's List that stated "Mr. McCollister (65) drowned, buried 7 Dec. 1857". Also, the Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1857 morning issue of the Columbus Inquirer Newspaper printed the following: "On Sunday afternoon, a feeble man named McAllister, employed in one of the factories, accidently fell into the river and was drowned." No burial site has been located at this time. Also, Robert's death date is based on information found in Guardianship papers executed prior to 1860 in Carroll County, GA. (Inferior Court Minutes, Book AA, p. 202). In those papers, Andrew J. McCollister of Carroll County, Ga is awarded guardianship of his sister, Catherine McCollister. Catherine was the youngest child of Robert and Sarah McCollister, Andrew J.'s parents. The guardianship papers note that "Catherine, a minor child of Robert McCollister, deceased." COMMENTARY: My assumption is that Sarah probably died before Robert and Catherine became an orphan when Robert presumably drowned in December of 1857. Also, the Indentured Deed executed in 1859 by the children of Sarah and Robert McCollister was signed by their children or their spouses and not by Sarah or Robert, indicating that both were dead prior to November of 1859. ROBERT MCCOLLISTER, FATHER OF THOMAS MCCOLLISTER: The following facts support the premise that Robert McAlister/McCollister was the father of Thomas McCollister (McCallister): 1. The 1840 census record shows that Robert McCallister lived in Carroll County, GA. Thomas McCollister's obituary stated that he was born in Carroll County, GA and moved to the Phenix City area in 1849. 2. 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, & 1920 census data show Thomas McCollister was born in Georgia. 3. Linwood Cemetery, Columbus, GA records lists a Mary Martin, identified as Thomas' sister; as being buried in Thomas' Plot, Lot 100. The 1850 Muscogee County, GA census for Robert and Sarah McCallister lists Mary as their oldest child @@ 21 years of age. Mary's obituary information states that she was survived by two brothers, Thomas and William. The 1850 census for Robert and Sarah McCallister lists two sons named Thomas and William. NOTE: We now know that Mary was not the first born child but was the fourth born child, with two older sisters, M. Elizabeth "Betsey" McCollister and Syrena Emaline McCollister and one older brother, Andrew J. McCollister. 4. Linwood Cemetery, Columbus, GA records lists a Mrs. Cathrine, last name unknown (grave slab broken and pieced, unreadable) born Aug. 13, 1847 and died Apr. 11, 1888 as being buried in Thomas' Plot, Lot 100. The 1850 Muscogee County, GA census for Robert and Sarah McCallister lists a daughter named Cathrine, age 3 years. --------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: The following McAlister/McCollisters were in Carroll Co., GA in 1853 based on the Carroll County Georgia 1853 Tax List: McAlister Alex 649 6 (Identity unknown; perhaps part of Tennessee McAlister line) McAlister Andrew 649 6 (Probably our Andrew Jackson McAlister) McAlister G.
