Notes
a. Note:   CENSUS DATA: The 1900 federal census, Montgomery Co., AL, Montgomery City, Beat 3, SD=2, ED=100, Sheet= B9, taken 6 June 1900 shows Robart L. McGraw, age 10 , born July 1889 in AL. He is shown as an adopted son of Robert E. & Virginia Fannen. Robert E. Fannen or Tannen is shown, age 54, born in AL and working as a shoe shop owner or school teacher. Living with Robert E. were Virginia, wife, age 53, born July 1846 in AL; Irma, dau., age 17, born Aug. 1882 in AL. The Fannen/Tannen family was shown living at 711 Hull St., Montgomery, AL. NOTE: The circumstances surrounding Robard (Robert) L. McGraw's adoption by the Fannen's/Tannen's is not known at this time. Why he was adopted by a Montgomery family is unknown since the assumption was that he was born near Birmingham as was his brother, Edward Carroll McGraw (information from Edward's obituary). A 1900 Montgomery census record also shows Robert's brother, Edward Carroll McGraw, as a boarder in the home of Ira S. & Addie Hunt Doster (see more detailed information under Edward Carroll McGraw's notes). Also, Robert's sister, Estelle McGraw is shown in the 1900 Jefferson Co., AL census record as the adopted daughter of William and Norma May of Birmingham (see more detailed information under notes for Estelle McGraw). QUESTIONS: What was the tie for the two McGraw boys back in Montgomery since their parents, John and Frances Bell Cox McGraw, apparently lived near Birmingham when the McGraw boys were born? Had the John McGraw family lived previously in Montgomery? Were the persons who adopted the McGraw children extended family members? COMMENTARY: For some reason(s) the John & Frances Bell Cox McGraw marriage ended between 1894, when their last child, Estell was born, and the 1900 census date when the children are shown living as adopted children or boarders. Whether a divorce occured or whether John McGraw died is not known at this time; research is on going.
CENSUS DATA: The 1910 federal census, Montgomery Co., AL, Montgomery City, Precinct 7, SD=2, ED=100, Sheet= 5A, shows Robert E. McGraw, age 20, single, born in AL & an adopted son of Robert E. & Virginia Fannen/Tannen. Robert E. Fannen is shown, age 64, born in AL, married 28 yrs. and working as a shoe shop owner. Living with Robert Fannen/Tannen were Virginia, wife, age 63, born in AL, married 28 yrs.; Eugene Gartman, son-in-law, age 31, born AL, married 2 yrs, born AL; Irma Fannen/Tannen Gartman, dau., age 27, born in AL, married 2 yrs.
CONFLICTING 1910 CENSUS RECORD INFO.: There is conflicting information on the 1910 census reports, i.e., Robert McGraw and Estell McGraw are shown in Montgomery and Birmingham as adopted as noted above, while a 1910 Birmingham census record shows all three McGraw children enumerated with John Robert and Frances Bell Cox McGraw McCollister (see more detailed information under notes for John Robert McCollister).
CENSUS DATA: The 1920 federal census, Montgomery Co., AL, Montgomery City, shows Robert E. McGraw as head of household, age 30 , born AL, working as an electrician. Living with him were Sarah, wife, age 19, born AL; Irma Gartman, sister-in-law, age 37, born AL and divorced. Also, a boarder is shown, Elizabeth Bishop, female, age 17, born VA and single (relationship unknown, if any). Robert and Sarah were living at 15 Herron St., Montgomery. Robert is shown as an electrician. NOTE: Irma Gartman is Robert E. McGraw's sister-in-law due to Robert's adoption by Irma Gartman's parents, Robert E. & Virginia Fannen/Tannen.
CENSUS DATA: The 1930 federal census, Coosa Co., AL, Goodwater, Precinct 4, SE=5, ED=19-6, Sheet=?, taken 9 April 1930 shows Robert H. (E) McGraw as head of household, age 40 , born AL, working as a proprietor of a service station. Living with him were Sarah, wife, age 29, born AL and Robert H., Jr., son, age 7, born AL. Robert and Sarah were living on Succapatoy St, Goodwater, AL. NOTE: The 1930 census notes that Robert was a veteran of WWI. ------------------------------------------- NOTE: Robert's middle initial was questionable for a period of time, since different intrepretaions were drawn from census records, i.e., E. L. and H. A review of the 1930 census record presented the clearest transcription and there it appeared to be Robert H. McGraw. Too, his son's middle initial appeared to be shown as Robert H. McGraw, Jr. on the same 1930 census record. However, in 2005 this researcher located the graves and head stones of Robert E. McGraw and Sarah Gilliland McGraw in the Old Goodwater City Cemetery in Goodwater, AL. The tombstone inscription clearly showed Robert's middle initial as E. ------------------------------------------------ Tombstone Inscription: Old Goodwater, AL City Cemetery Robert E.
