Note: New York, Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1850 Name: William Martin Arrival Date: 5 May 1849 Age: 22 Port of Arrival: New York Port of Departure: Belfast Place of Origin: Ireland Ship: Hannah Kerr Family Identification: 1639111 Microfilm Serial Number: M237 ------------------------------------------------- CENSUS DATA: The 1860 federal census, Muscogee Co., Columbus, GA, p. 84, shows Wm. Martin, age 39, married and working as (unreadable). Living with him were, Jane, age 38, female, born GA; Sarah Y., female, age 5, born GA; James T., male, age 3, born GA; and Mary A. 6 mos, born GA. COMMENTARY: The above census appears to be William R. Martin, although the age seems to be off and his place of birth is incorrect. This is the first time that the above noted children have been identified, with the exception of Mary A. However, is seems plausible that William and Jane would have children earlier than 1860 as originally thought, since they were married in March of 1853. NOTE: In the above 1860 census record, Wm. and Jane are shown living next door to Thomas Summersgill and his wife, Mary McCollister Summersgill, Jane's older sister. CENSUS DATA: The federal census of 1870, Lee Co., AL, Brownville Beat, Post Office Columbus, GA, p. 3 or 5, shows W. Martin, age 37, born Ireland. Living with him were: J., wife, age 35, born GA; M, dau., age 11, born GA; R., dau., age 9, born GA; J., dau., age 6, born GA; E., dau., age 4, born Ga; and D., son, age 1, born AL. NOTE: Also living in the home were, Rachael Martin, female, age 43, born Ireland and William R. Martin, male, age 14 and born Ireland. Based on the 1880 census, Rachael Martin was W. Martin's sister. The identity of the teen, William R. Martin, is unknown at this time. COMMENTARY: This census record appears to be that of William R. Martin and his first wife, Jane McCollister. The ages do not match exactly; however, the initials seem to match the known names, i.e., W.=William R. Martin; J.=Jane McCollister;M.=Mary Martin; R.=Rachael Martin; J.=Sarah Jane Martin; E.=Eliza Martin; and D.=David Martin. COMMENTARY: 2nd 1870 census data for William R. Martin family. Apparently the William R. Martin family completed an Alabama and a Georgia census record in 1870. Maybe their residence in Lee Co., AL and the Columbus, GA Postoffice address confused the issue.
