Note: CENSUS DATA: The 1860 census record of June 11, 1860; Carroll Co., Ga. shows Edley J. Davis, age 25 and "Cenna", i.e., Syrena Emaline McCollister Davis, age 26. Living with them are three children: "Wn. R", i.e., William Robert Davis, son., age 5; "Sarah L.", i.e., Sarah Louisa Davis, dau., age 3; and "Geo. R.", i.e., George R. Davis, son, age 1. NOTE: The following information provided through RootsWeb by Mary Fredell, relative of Edley Davis: "I think my great grandfather was Edley Jackson Davis, Jr. like you said. What is interesting is that my grandmother (Edley, Jr.'s daughter) had a sister named Lucinda and she noted that someone in our family on the Davis side is buried in Mobile Alabama at a military cemetary and maybe it's Edley Sr. From the family history that was passed on to me, I have it that Edley, Jr.'s father (no name given) was drafted in the Confederate Army and sent to Mobile. He died of dysentery." NOTE: Other Davis family kin have also indicated that Edley J. Davis, Sr. served in the CSA and was sent Mobile, AL where he died of dysentery (See Lynn Lett's comments below). NOTE: The following information provided by Lynne Lett, relative of Edley Davis. "Edley Jackson Davis, Sr is the brother to my Great Great Grandfather, John Jefferson Davis. Edley was 1 of 9 children born to William and Louisa. Edley Sr. married Syrene Emaline McAllister on September 19, 1850 in Carroll County, Ga. He died of dysentary in the Confederate States Army in Mobile Alabama. He is buried in a military cemetery there, possible the National Military Cemetery, I have someone looking for that gravesite. Syrene was born in 1826 in SC, born to Robert McAllister/ McCollister and Sarah Bailey. Edley, Sr & Syrene had 6 children. William, Sarah Louisa, George, Hanna S.L., Edley Jr. and John T. I have a little bit more information on them but not much. If you are interested in it or in John Jefferson Davis, Edley's brother please contact me at SwtSthrnDelight@@aol.com. Hope this helped a little bit. " COMMENTARY: Since census data on Edley Davis, Sr. has not been found after the 1860 census and that Syrena Emaline McCollister Davis is shown in both the 1870 & 1880 living in the Columbus, GA - Phenix City, AL area with her children, it is highly probable that Edley, Sr. perished in the Civil War as indicated by family lore as noted above. NOTE: Information related to Edley, Sr. induction in to the CSA or his burial at Mobile have not been confirmed as of this time.
