Note: CENSUS DATA In the 1880 United States Federal Census, Frances Fletcher, 40, head, born abt 1840, father born VA & mother born GA and living in Brownville, Lee, Alabama. Living with her were Frank Dennis 32, son in law, born GA; Amanda Dennis 28, daughter, born GA; Virginia Dennis 8, gdaughter, born AL; Beulah Dennis 2, gdaughter, born AL; Rachel Welch 37, sister, born GA. COMMENTARY: This record is confusing. Apparently, Frances Fletcher, oldest child of John Y. and Ellen Fletcher was heading this home. Whether she was widowed and retained her maiden name or unmarried at this time is unknown. However, it seems probable that Amanda Dennis is Frances Fletcher's sister who married Frank Dennis. And the Dennis children are Frances Fletcher's niece and nephew. Also, it seems probable that Rachel Welch shown as Frances Fletcher's sister is Rachel Fletcher who married Henry Welch in Columbus, GA in May of 1865. At any rate, it is believed that this census record relates to the John Y. and Ellen Fletcher family.
