Both of these letters are located in the Noel Burton estate files, 1778, 1841, in the N.C. State Archives.] Smith County [TN] 16th January 1804 Sir I rec'd yours informing me of the Sale you and Chas. Burton made of a Tract of Land belonging to us. I Return you thanks for the information also it gave us Satisfaction to hear that you and family were Well. I have delay'd to answer your letter until now, not having any thing Material to write and no very favourable Opportunity of writing except by post and that is expensive. I saw a Caption of the Acts Passed this last Session of the Legislature of the State of No. Carolina and one Empowering you to sell Certain Lands in Caswell County. Your Brother Edmund is out here and Joins with me in Requesting you to Write us on the subject and I wish you to act for me and will with pleasure pay you for any trouble or Expense you may be at in doing the Business there for me. We should be Very glad to see you out here if it was any way Convenient for you. Crops were very good last year '97 news we have none. Dolley has Eight Children, the last is a Girl, and are all well and send all the love and respect possible to you, Nancy and the Children, and hope this will find you and them in health.
