a. Note:   NI19096 Apparently died in childbirth ********************************************************* Note: From Murfreesboro, TN paper "The Courier, Vol. II, #85 Wednesday Feb. 16, 1831" Petition for divorce - Mildred Palmer has petitioned the court for a divorce from William H. Palmer. They were married in June 1823 and they have one child. Wm. H. Palmer now lives in another state. (Submitted by Estelle Hall)
Although the marriage of Mildred Johns Palmer and Samuel Smith has not been proved, it is believed to be accurate. It is known that Joseph B. Johns had a granddaughter, Caroline Mildred Smith, who was listed as an heir, in right of her late mother, in the settlement of Joseph B. Johns' estate in 1845.
********************************************************* Note: In Ernest K. Johns research on his line there is a Mildred L. Palmer who married Samuel Smith. Their daughter Caroline M. was born April 7, 1833. Mildred died April 7, 1833. It states Caroline had a half brother Horace. Horace Palmer was not born until 1855. Joseph B. Palmer was born in 1825 to Mildred Ann Johns and Wm. H. Palmer. All three were lawyers in Murfreesboro. I believe Joseph would have been the half brother. In Joseph B. Johns will (d. 1839) there is mention of grandson Joseph B. Palmer, guardian Varner D. Cowan (Cowan was married to Susan Johns) and Caroline Mildred Smith, guardian Samuel Smith. Goodspeed's indicates the following items in their biography. He (Joseph B. Palmer) was raised by his maternal grandparents after the death of his mother in 1830. (Maternal grandparents Joseph B. Johns and Elizabeth). His father relocated to Illinois where he practiced medicine until his death.
Item found in Rutherford Co. Historical Soc. Pub. #19, Summer 1982 (contributed by Ernest K.   There is a notation that the papers (found in 1981 by Bill Lynch in home of Enoch Jones) are still fairly well preserved and Mr. Lynch is going to allow the Tennessee State Library to microfilm these rare early news papers from Rutherford Co.
