Mr. Dewey was born on May 16, 1912, in Tullahom, Tenn., son of the late Edward Leon Dewey and Alvernon Deakins Dewey. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dewey was preceded in death by his wife, Vula Wingfield Dewey, in 1981, and Mary Glover Dewey, whom he married in 1986; a brother, Edward L. Dewey Jr. of Lawton, Okla.; and two sisters, Hazel Bone of Beaumont, Texas, and Mary Dance of Fayetteville, N.C. Mr. Dewey received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and was a member there of the university of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. On Jan. 10, 1942, he married Vula Abbott Wingfield in First Presbyterian Church in Rome. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to his marriage, and the couple was sent to Aberdeen, Md. Later, they would be transferred to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey moved to Rome where they would spend the rest of their lives. His career with Georgia Power Co. spanned many years constructing power plants all over the state, notably Plant Hammond in Rome, Plant Bowen in Cartersville, Plant Harley Branch in Milledgeville and Plant Hatch in Baxley. He retired from Georgia Power in 1978. Mr. Dewey was a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors. Harlen Dewey was very generous with his time and his gift of friendship to others. He was awarded the Spirit Award by the United Way of Rome and Floyd County in 2005. Mr. Dewey considered his church and his steadfast service to the Lord the most important part of his life. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder since 1977. Mr. Dewey is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Davin Jackson of Asheville, N.C.; one grandson, John Davin Jackson Jr. and his wife, Abigail, of Cumming; one granddaughter, Meredith Wingfield Jackson of Long Beach, Calif.; and a great-grandson, John Davin Jackson III (Trey) of Cumming. Ten nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Dewey will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Scott Jackson, Dr. Bill Flannagan and the Rev. Wayne Neiderhuth officiating. Interment will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at Daniel's Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be chosen from the ruling class of elders at First Presbyterian Church with honorary pallbearers being members of the Thursday morning men's prayer breakfast. Those serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble in the lobby of the church no later than 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church Minister's Discretionary Fund or to the American Cancer Society, 3 Central Plaza, Box 225, Rome, GA 30161.
