11/6/02 Written down by Ruth Bobb, transcribed by Steve Bobb- Born on George St. (at Home)-middle child. Educated Norristown School District. Moved around a lot (see above notes), but didn't affect schooling (Jr& sr. high) Was a very shy child & only spoke at home where I couldn't keep my mouth shut. Graduated High school in 1940. That summer went to work as a waitress in Atlantic City (Holmhurst Hotel). It was the best summer I ever had! My mom talked my Dad in letting me go. Prior to that earned money babysitting for 25 cents an evening and earned 10 cents a week keeping my Dad's shoes polished.
Played basketball in Jr & Sr High school, but was never a starter (always a sub), but enjoyed physical activities, tennis, roller skating, swimming. Didn't enjoy housework, because we kids had to do so much when Mother worked. My job was to clean bathroom and to this day hate that job. On my return from shore, became a telephone operator @@$12.00 a week, which I hated but made a lot of friends. This is when I began to smoke on our 15 min. break we had to go to the smoking lounge, so joined rest of the smokers. Smoked until I was about 58 yrs. old. After Bell job went to Norristown Business College where I took typing, bookkeeping & adding machine since I fully expected a miracle to happen & I would go to college, so I didn't take these subjects in high school. Instead took college prep. course. My grades were good enough in high school that my home room teacher wanted to get a scholarship for me, but I needed $500.00 towards school which I couldn't get. Daddy wanted Alan to go to college that was the way of the world then! After 3 months I got a job at Provident Insurance Co in West Phila... I paid my parents back for my schooling. Loved working in the city & stayed until I became engaged to Ernest Bobb in 1944. He drove a convertible & smoked a pipe. He was blonde & blue eyed- this was during WW 2. Went to work at Peoples Bank on Main St in Norristown, Pa in early 1945 & married the same year & worked until Aug of 1946. I was a bank teller & also a bookkeeper and when I left Mr. Glenn, bank president said that he would take me back whenever I wanted to work again. I took him up on it after Jody went into 2nd grade & worked part time10-3 throughout the school term for 3 yrs. Ernie & I lived on Plymouth Rd for 7 yrs. where Stephen was born in 1947 & Jody in 1951. In July 1951 we moved to 136 Walker Lane in King of Prussia, PA, where we stayed until 1958 & then moved to 418 Old Fort Rd. At that time I was working for bank in Norristown. In 1952 my Dad died suddenly & our life was upside down for a while. About 1959 worked for Upper Merion School District at Gulph Rd. School. Then in 1961 started work at Baptist Convention (International Ministries), where I worked until 1974, when I retired for health reasons. After that had misc. jobs working for Avon, Roaman's, Hess's, Hearders Cutlery & Sears. Enjoyed them all, especially meeting the public. In the meanwhile the kids got married & left home & Ernie and I began to travel & enjoy ourselves & moved a bit up in the world, and have been doing the same since. Have done oil painting, which I enjoyed. Used to make all my children's clothes, slipcovers, knit sweaters, crocheted afghans, painted woodwork, did paper hanging, all which I enjoyed. At one time took Penn State Extension Courses in home decorating & gardening (by mail)
