11/6/02 Notes by Ruth Bobb 9/22/90 written by Steve Bobb- Henry ( Harry) Lightkep. Called Henry by brothers and sisters. Born in Plymouth Meeting, third eldest of 6 children of Solomon & Mary McNoldy Lightkep. Attended Plymouth schools to 10th grade, after which he went to Williamson Trade School in Delaware County. He never graduated, but learned the carpentry trade. His father was a carpenter. He was raised Luthern, but as a father never went to church except on special days, but made sure his kids went to Sunday school & joined church(Luthern). Also as children we had to observe the Sabbath Day. Not allowed to jump rope, roller skate, sew, knit ect on Sundays.
He married Cora French during WW 1 and had 3 children from 1919 to 1926. They lived mostly in Norristown, except for a short time in Reading. Owned his first home on Buttonwood St., Norristown where Alan was born. In 1928 he bought a beautiful single home at 1936 Juniata Rd., Jeffersonville. This was repossesed by the bank during the depression in the 30's. After that lived all over Norristown in rented homes( see Ruth Bobb notes). He worked not at his trade but at the steel mill on River Rd below Bridgeport, Pa and at a mill called Diamond State in Bridgeport . When he was unable to get a job his wife worked & he kept house and took care of the children. When he returned to carpentry , worked on The Norris Theatre in Norristown on Main St , since torn down and replaced by a McDonalds restraunt, since relocated and abandoned. Built houses in Coleston Area ( East Norriton) & also helped build Eisenhower School on Markley St. where I graduated High School from. Worked as a carpenter until his death at age 60 of a heart attack. He never served in the military & never learned to drive a car until he was in his late 50's. He was never able to buy a home until 1943 , when they bought a home at 1535 Dekalb St., Norristown ,Pa for $5,000 where they lived until 1952, when they bought a single in Plymouth Valley. Belonged to Odd Fellows & Montgomery Fire House in Norristown. Used to like and play cards at fire house on Sunday afternoons and was constantly late for Sunday dinner at 3:00 p.m..
He was very affectionate. He enjoyed gardening & raised peonies & gladiolas & other special flowers. He was especially proud of his grandchildren & was good to his children, although strict. He was always good to his brothers & sisters. He lost his parents in 1920 & 1921. The Lightkep Homestead still exists on Bulter Pike in Plymouth Meeting.
He smoked cigarettes & a pipe. Stopped in after work at Tap room for a drink with the guys. Was very social & had many friends. He was almost 6' tall and weighed about 175-180 #. He had flatfeet which his daughters Dot & Ruth inherited
