Tn Kirk, Hyra m 00001-0001 (Unusual to find a Kirk in this area this early) NOTE 5: A.M. Kirk ran a general store that was located right beside what is n ow Highway 27 in Roane Co. Tn. Before the highway was built the house stoo d where the store is or was now. The area was in a rugged and mostly isolat ed section of Walden's Ridge, A very high mountain which runs for hundreds of miles from New Jersey through Tn. A.M. was said to have been a fantast ic grower of watermelons. During the construction of highway 27 the front hal f of his house was demolished, the back part then became the store and a new house was built not far from the site of the old one. Matt was said to have been generous to a fault. He lost a lot of money during the depression by al lowing people to buy "on credit". He would tell them to pay when they could. (Of course they never did). Because of this he ended up selling the majori ty of the property during or shortly after the depression. In his early life he worked on his father's farm in a town called New Port in Cocke Co. Tn. He said that for 6 months after he and Maime were married that her oldest si ster lived with them because Maime didn't know how to cook. Though Matt was th e appropriate age to serve during the Civil War it is unknown if he did. No records have been found to suggest it. NOTE 6: Relatives 1920 Census Monroe C o. Tn Madisonville G. H. There are doubts in my mind about his being the son of Joseph since Elisabeth was previously married to an (Unknown) Carter. I'm am still researching this line. Note 8: Roane C o.
