Notes
a. Note:   . The tops of the trees were converted into charcoal, and in his boyhood years James was employed in vending the charcoal to retail customers. One of these customers was Prof. Julius F. Miner, who took a liking to the bright boy of twelve. Several years later, Prof. Miner was practicing medicine in Buffalo, NY. and wishing to obtain a young man to study in his office, he sent for the former charcoal boy. He lived with Prof. Miner until his graduation from the Medical Department of the Univ. of Buffalo, receiving his M.D. in 1860. He began to practice medicine in Westfield, MA., in 1860. He served in the Civil War as a surgeon of the 46th MA. Infantry from Oct 30 1862 to Jul 29 1863. After the death of his father-in-law, Hon. Hiram Harrison (Mr. Harrison manufactured whips which at one time was the largest in the world.), James was impelled to devote himself for five years to manufacturing pursuits in order to save loss to the estate. That being successful he then resumed his career and obtained one of the largest medical practices in western MA. He was a member of the MA. Medical Society in 1866 and a member of the American Medical Society. In 1877 he was appointed Medical Examiner for the Western Hampden District.
Note:   His early education was obtained at Prescott, MA. and at the New Salem Academy. He then taught school and completed his preparation for college at Monson Academy, Monson, MA. His father was a lumber merchant and also cut timber and sawed the logs
