Note: RACHELL EDGOOSE née BIRD 1613-1682 Rachel, daughter of Arthur BIRDE, was baptised at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, on 19 December 1613. (PR) (www.familysearch.org has 23 December 1613) Arthur BIRDE had married Katherine BOTTOME at Pinchbeck on 16 January 1611/12. (PR) John EDGOOSE married Rachell BIRD at Pinchbeck on 19 January 1631/32. In her book 'Geese, Gowts and Gallygaskins' Judith Withyman wrote that "Rachael BIRD, the nineteen year old daughter of Arthur the member of an arms bearing family which had come down from Penrith to seek their fortune, was pregnant when she married John EDGOOSE, a husbandman's son, in 1632. He was thirty one and his father had died eighteen months before the wedding and it may be significant that his future father in law was a signatory to his own father's inventory. The couple had thirty-five years of marriage and ten children, six of whom survived, three having good Puritan names of Joseph, Jeremiah and James." In fact there is no evidence that Rachael was pregnant when she married John EDGOOSE in January 1631/32. Her first child John EDGOOSE was baptised at Pinchbeck on 8 August 1633 followed by eight siblings rather than nine between 1635 and 1655. John EDGOOSE, husbandman, was buried at Pinchbeck on 17 January 1667/68. (LCC Wills 1668/188) An Index of the Will of John EDGOOSE (1601-1668), yeoman, of Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire Consistory Court Will 1668/18 The list of contributors to the collection for the redemption of Christian slaves in 1670 lists Rachell EDGOOSE and Wid. EDGOOSE. (Pinchbeck Parish Register 17 08 002 04A) The 1680 list includes Wid. EDGOOSE but not Rachel. (17 08 001 04A) Another Rachell EDGOOSE, widow, married Philip RAWSON at Pinchbeck on 2 December 1670. She was almost certainly the widow of the Robert EDGOOSE (1603-1669) who had married Rachell BENETLAND in 1633. In his will made on 20 April 1672 William SMYTH of Pinchbeck, yeoman, leaves two shillings and six pence apiece to "Joseph EDGOOSE, Jeremiah EDGOOSE, James EDGOOSE, Margret EDGOOSE and widow EDGOOSE their mother". Joseph, Jeremiah and James EDGOOSE were John and Rachel EDGOOSE's children. (LCC Wills 1672/i/218) An Index to the Will of William SMYTH (????-1672), yeoman of Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, made in April 1672. Probate was granted at Lincoln on 5 May 1672.
