Note: JAMES EDGOOSE 1651-1715 James, son of John EDGOOSE, was baptised at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, on 7 September 1651. (PR) John EDGOOSE had married Rachell BIRD at Pinchbeck on 19 January 1631/32. In his will made on 14 January 1667/68 John EDGOOSE of Pinchbeck refers to his son James. (LCC Wills 1668/188) An Index of the Will of John EDGOOSE (1601-1668), yeoman, of Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. Lincoln Consistory Court Will 1680 i 180 He contributed 2d. to the collection for the redemption of poor Christian slaves held at Pinchbeck in 1680. (John EDGOOSE contributed 6d., Joseph EDGOOSE 4d., Widow EDGOOSE 4d., and Adlard EDGOOSE 4d.). (Source: Pinchbeck Parish Register 17 08 001 04A) The will of his father-in-law Thomas HAMERTON made on 10 October 1679 included the following: "It I give unto James EDGOOSE my Boate". "....... but if the said Alse my Wife doe chance marrie againe then my will is that shee the said Alse shall pay forty shilling to RACHEL EDGOOSE, the child of my daughter Alse, and if it die then I give to the next Child of Alse." (LCC Wills 1680/i/180) Margaret, daughter of James and Alice EDGOOSE, was baptised at Pinchbeck on 26 June 1682. Thomas, son of James and Alice EDGOOSE, was baptised at Pinchbeck on 13 December 1683. Alice, daughter of James and Alice EDGOOSE, was baptised at Pinchbeck on 21 February 1685/86 and buried there on 16 July 1686. Elizabeth, daughter of James EDGOOSE, was buried at Pinchbeck on 28 August 1692. Elizabeth, daughter of James and Alice EDGOOSE, was baptised at Pinchbeck on 25 September 1692. In 1695 he contributed 6d. to the collection at Pinchbeck for the "Warwick Breife". Widow Ann EDGOOSE contributed 1d. and John EDGOOSE 1s.0d. (LRO 17 08 001 04A) He was appointed to serve as one of the ale tasters for the current year at the manor court held on 11 April 1698 (1699?). (Spalding cum Membris Court Rolls PRO SC2 187/38) On 6 June 1698 William WRIGHT was apprenticed to James EDGOOSE of Pinchbeck to learn husbandry. (Pinchbeck Parish 13/AP/101) James EDGOOSE's wife Alice was to leave all her late husband's clothes to "William WRIGHT her late servant" in 1716. (LCC Wills 1716 ii) He was appointed to serve as a fenreeve for the following year at the Court held on 2 April 1703. (Spalding cum Membris Court Rolls PRO SC2 187/40) At the Manor Court held on 17 October 1712 (at which John EDGOOSE was a juror for Pinchbeck) he was presented for allowing water from his ditch called Hempdike to run into Moneybridge Lane to the annoyance of the tenants of the Manor. He was fined 12 pence and ordered to remove the water before November 11th next or forfeit six shillings and eight pence to the Lord of the Manor: "Item Jur' pred'c'i presentant q'd Jacobus EDGOOSE p'misit aquam ex fossa sua vocat his Hempdike currere in locum vocat Money Bridge lane ad Nocumentum tenen' hujus Maner' J'o est in n'ma D'ne Maner' pred' xij d. Et ordinant q'd amovebit Eand' ante Vno decimu' diem Novembris p'x' sequen' sub pena forisfaciend' D'ne Maner' pred' vj s. viij d." (SGS 3 folio 194). At the Manor Court held on 24 April 1713 (at which John EDGOOSE and Thomas EDGOOSE were jurors for Pinchbeck) it was presented that "Jacobus EDGOOSE posuit ffundibulum brevius quam debet esse in Via vocat Money bridge lane J'o est in n'na D'ne Maner' pred' vj d. Et ordinant q'd idem faciet sufficiens ante Vicesimum diem Maij p'x' sequen' sub pena foris faciend D'ne Maner' pred' v s." (SGS 3 1708-1717 folio 213) Translation: Item: the jurors aforesaid present that James EDGOOSE has laid a foundation shallower than it ought to be in Money Bridge Lane, Therefore he is in mercy to the Lady of the aforesaid manor 6d. And they order that he should make it sufficient before the twentieth day of May next following, under pain of forfeiting to the Lady of the aforesaid manor 5s. James EDGOOSE, husbandman, was buried at Pinchbeck on 11 July 1715. Alice EDGOOSE, his widow, was buried on 9 May 1716. (revised 15.10.2019)
