Note: URCE: EMAIL FROM SUE SODEN \par "The following information was told to me in 1989 by Veva Sawyer Davis, great-granddaughter of Margaret Van Arsdale (Harriet's sister). \par "Simon Van Arsdale [Van Alsdale] was born in June, 1790, in Pennsylvania. Nancy Walker was born in September of \par that same year, in Virginia. They married, and had nine children: Julia A., William H., Harriet, Mary, Margaret, John, Alex, Martha E., and Nancy. Margaret was born in Lafayette, Indiana on February 18, 1823. Simon, , his wife Nancy, and six of their nine children died while traveling by covered wagon. The family was buried along the road. The three surviving children were Harriet, Margaret, and Nancy. The little girls were "let out" to earn their keep. They would work very hard \par in the field, till blood ran down from their hands. Possibly an Aunt (D.?) help raised them.Harriet married Sam Enfield, and went on to live in Boone, Iowa. Nancy married a man named Frazier, and eventually lived in Marshalltown, Iowa." \par NOTE: Unfortunately there are several inaccuracies in the above account, which have now been settled by the finding of new records for this family \par --OBITUARY OF HARRIET VAN ARSDALE ENFIELD The Boone News Republican, Boone, Iowa Friday,May 3, 1907 Was For Many Years a Pioneer. Death of Mrs. Enfield at Ogden Causes Much Gloom Among Her Many Friends and Acquaintances.The following obituary sketch of the late Mrs. Harriet Enfield is taken from the Ogden Reporter. Mrs. Enfield was well known in this city. Harriet B. VanArsdel, daughter of Simon and Nancy VanArsdel, born in Boone county, Indiana, June 25, 1818, and departed to her heavenly abode, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Akers, April 18, 1907, having journeyed through this earthly life 88 years, 10 months, and 4 days. \par --Our sister was united in marriage to Samuel Enfield on June 1, 1837,and they made their home in Boone county, Indiana, for 24 years. Here their seven children were born. She removed with her husband and family to Iowa in 1861spending two years in Linn county, and then coming to Boone county, where her residence has been ever since. --She was bereft of her husband, May 24, 1901, after a companionship together for 65 years. She leaves to revere her memory, five daughters, Mrs. R. A. Williams and Mrs. E. E. Akers of Ogden, Mrs. Brinkley of Eugene, Oregon, Mrs. A. E. Bennet of Los Gatos, Cal., and Mrs. J. D. Elliott of Dale, Idaho, besides numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends. Sister Enfield was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. She has continued a devoted and consecrated member thereof all through these years, having been connected with the Quincy church through the many years of its history.
