Notes
a. Note:   s particular John Van Arsdale was a widower in 1820 Harrison Co IN census, but 1840 Montgomery Co IN census shows him as an elderly living with an elderly spouse. \par --I have seen surname spelled many ways: Vanartsdalen, Vanarsdall, Vanarsdell, Van Alsdale, Van Arsdalen, Van Ausdall, Van Osdall, etc, etc, etc in records \par --1800 Bucks Co PA census, couple age 26-44, 2 sons, 1 dau. \par --1810 Harrison Co IN census \par --1820 Harrison Co IN census: JOHN VAN ARSDALE, age 45+, no wife? 6 older sons at home, 2 older daughters. He lived near SIMON VAN ARSDALE age 26-45 (married NANCY WALKER 1814, died 1828 Harrison IN), JACOB VAN ARSDALE age 16-26 (married ELIZABETH ENFIELD), and THOMAS ENFIELD, (father of ELIZABETH who married JACOB VAN ARSDALE and whose grandson SAMUEL ENFIELD married HARRIET VAN ARSDALE, daughter of SIMON & NANCY). \par --1828 will & estate documents, Harrison Co IN: May 3rd 1828: SIMON told me and Alexander McCray and Robert Watson that he wanted the deed to be made to NANCY and all the property is to be hers to rase (sic) the children May 5th 1828 JOHN VANARSDEL \par --"Be it remembered that on the third day of May 1828, SIMON VANARSDALL being of that time sick of body...but of sound mind & memory, made the following dis(illegible) of his property. That he wanted the deed to his land to be made to his wife NANCY and that all his property should be hers to raise and support the children--which said declaration was intended as his last will & testament and the undersigned and the above named Alexander McCray and Robert Watson were called upon to witness the same and that the undersigned reduced the same to writing on the 5th day of May, 1828, which said writing is hereto prefixed. JOHN VAN ARSDEL" \par --1830 Orange Co IN census: JOHN VAN ARSDALE age 60-70, one female age 50-60, one son age 20-30, one daughter 16-20 (not sure this is correct individual) Jacob Van Arsdale still in Harrison Co IN. \par --1840 Montgomery Co IN census Franklin twp: JOHN VAN ARSDALE age 70-80 wife age 70-80; living next door to JACOB VAN ARSDALE age 40-50, JOSEPH VAN ARSDALE age 20-30 and HENRY VAN ARSDALE age 30-40. His three orphanned granddaughters HARRIET VAN ARSDALE, MARGARET VAN ARSDALE and NANCY VAN ARSDALE also lived in Montgomery Co IN during this time period; HARRIET married SAMUEL ENFIELD June 1, 1837 Montgomery Co IN; MARGARET married NATHAN CALDWELL Feb 6, 1845 Montgomery Co IN and NANCY married ELI BRANSON FRAZIER May 20, 1847 in nearby (like ten miles away) Thornton, Boone Co IN. \par --From census records it appears that JOHN VAN ARSDALE was father to Simon, Jacob, Joseph, & Henry Van Arsdale and more. He was too old to be their brother. }
