Notes
a. Note:   I have seen surname spelled many ways: Vanartsdalen, Vanarsdall, Vanarsdell, Van Alsdale, Van Arsdalen, Van Ausdall, Van Osdall, etc, etc, etc in records \par --First name sometimes listed as "Simeon" in records. \par --NEW INFO FROM EMAIL BY SUE SODEN: The following information was told to me in 1989 by Veva Sawyer Davis, great-granddaughter of Margaret Van Arsdale. Simon Van Arsdale [VanAlsdale] was born in June,1790, in Pennsylvania. Nancy Walker was born in September of that same year, in Virginia. They married, and had nine children: Julia A., William H., Harriet, Mary, Margaret, John, Alex, Martha E., and Nancy. Margaret was born in Lafayette, Indiana on February 18, 1823. Simon, his wife Nancy, and six of their nine children died while traveling by covered wagon The family was buried along the road (this is untrue: will documents show that they owned land in Harrison Co IN). The three surviving children were Harriet, Margaret, and Nancy. The little girls were let out to earn their keep.They would work very hard in the field, till blood ran down from their hands. Possibly an Aunt (D.?) help raised them. Harriet married Sam Enfield, and went on to live in Boone, Iowa. Nancy married a man named Frazier, and eventually lived in Marshalltown, Iowa. \par --NOTE: Unfortunately there are several inaccuracies in the above account, which have now been settled by the finding of new records for this family \par --Apparently SIMON VAN ARSDALE didn't die in the 1832 epidemic as had been previously thought. Newly found will & estate documents from Harrison Co IN show that he likely died in 1828 (see below). His wife Nancy & six of his children did likely die in the cholera epidemic of 1832 as mentioned by several family members. \par --Records found: \par --1812 Harrison Co IN Militia Simon Vanarsdall \par --1814 Sept 21, marriage record, Corydon, Harrison Co IN --1814 marriage record: consent by of John Tewell/Tuell, guardian (of Nancy), marriage performed by Dennis Pennington, Justice of the Peace of Harrison Co IN \par --1820 census Harrison Co IN \par --1828 will & estate record, as follows: May 3, 1828 Harrison Co IN: SIMON told me and Alexander McCray and Robert Watson that he wanted the deed to be made to NANCY and all the property is to be hers to rase (sic) the children May 5th 1828 JOHN VANARSDEL \par -- WILL OF SIMON VAN ARSDALE Corydon, Harrison Co IN: Be it remembered that on the third day of May 1828, SIMON VANARSDALL being of that time sick of body...but of sound mind & memory, made the following dis(illegible) of his property. That he wanted the deed to his land to be made to his wife NANCY and that all his property should be hers to raise and support the children--which said declaration was intended as his last will & testament and the undersigned and the above named Alexander McCray and Robert Watson were called upon to witness the same and that the undersigned reduced the same to writing on the 5th day of May, 1828, which said writing is hereto prefixed. JOHN VAN ARSDEL \par --JOHN VAN ARSDALE was father of SIMON VAN ARSDALE and appears in 1820 Harrison Co IN census records (too old to be a brother of SIMON). \par --1830 Harrison Co IN census shows wife NANCY VAN ARSDALE as a widow with many children. \par --Buried in Vanarsdale cemetery, Webster twp, Harrison Co IN with son John (no dates). Probably rest of family is buried there also, as that was their homestead.}
