Notes
a. Note:   From Holtz Family History by Kathleen Holtz:
Anna was born in the area of Tachau [Tachov?], Czech Republic, about 25 miles from Weiden [in der Oberpfalz], Germany. Another family source says she was born at Altezetletch, Austria-Hungary. On any census records, marriage records, etc., Anna simply listed Germany as her country of birth. Anna settled near Littleport in Clayton County, IA with her widowed mother and her two bachelor brothers.
While pregnant with her only son, George, Anna was abandoned by John Helm and went to live at the Buchanan County Poor Farm. Her oldest daughter lived with the father, John Helm, while the second daughter was taken in by the Gleerup family of Independence.
Anna went to work for August Holtz as a "hired girl" sometime after both the 1894 death of his first wife and the 1895 birth of George at the County Poor Farm. Anna and August were married by Justice of the Peace D.F. Bisbee. On her marriage certificate, her name was inked in as Anna Helm, but she boldly wrote over it "Anna Holtz". Anna and August continued to reside on August's farm.
In December 1910, Anna petitioned the court for an advance of $200 on her share of August's estate, to "support herself and her children for the term of twelve months". The document stated that she had also $2000 which as "out at interest and unavailable at this time". Presumably this petition was granted.
By January 1912 Anna Holtz had purchased a home in Edgewood, IA from Mrs. M.L. Lathrop for $1350. Her son George (16) and daughters Bertha (10) and Catharine (7) lived with her.
Note: Anna Maria Johanna Emmerling born 1862 in Nuremberg (not far from Tachau) died in Nuremberg in 1873.
