Notes
a. Note:   "The Belgians of the 34th Wisconsins Infantry left Wisconsin on January 31, 1863 and arrive at Columbus, Kentucky on February 2, where they performed camp and guard duties at Fort Halleck. They remained there until May 12, 1863 when the Regiment was sent to Memphis, Tennessee. The non-commission officers of the Belgian Company, which was Company H, were Sgt. Theodore Bouchonville, Adolph Jadin, Charles Pinchart and Louis Hoebreckx. The Corporals were, Clement Decelle, Francois Decelle, Amand Noel, and Jean Joseph Rouer. Some fo the non-commissione officiers may have prior military service in Belgium which was the reason that they were chosen to be N.C.O.'s. An example was Charles Pinchart who had served in the Belgian Army with the 8th Regiment for a period of four years. The 7 men who died of disease where Francois Vanderzande, Andre Lamal, Jean B. Tricot, David Cesar, Eugene Vanhosmal, and Clement Decelle. Of these 7 men, Vandervande, Decelle, and Lamal, left wives and children to the care of friends and relatives. Decelle and Lamal's wives both remarried to Belgians who did not see military duty during the war." -- John Henry Mertens, "The Second Battle: A Story of Our Belgian Ancestors in the American Civil War 1861-1865" (1986), p. 60.
