Note: 8 Richard Bass was evidently the older of the two sons of Andrew Bass, so he must have inherited substantial land holdings from his father. He is said to have been born in 1732 in North Carolina, but I suspect he may have been born a few years earlier in Virginia. I know very little about him, except that he was Colonel (commander) of the militia in Dobbs County during the Revolution. His wife's name is reported to have been Sarah McKinnie. They had five children, three sons and two daughters. He died in what had become Wayne County in 1792.. On 24 Nov 1767 Andrew Bass Sr of Dobbs Co, NC, Planter, for love and affection deed to my oldest son Richard Bass and his children: Edward, Andrew, Uriah, Elizabeth, and Sarah....all the lands lying to the westward of the Great Branch including the plantation I now dwell and reside. In addition, the following is granted: to Richard Bass, negro man, 1/4 cattle; Edward Bass, negroes; Andrew Bass, 2negroes; Uriah Bass; 4 negroes; Elizabeth Bass, 1 feather bed and furniture; Sarah Bass, 1 feather bed & furniture. (Book 15, p. 223, at New Bern, Craven Co, NC). Will dated 22 Jan 1770; probated March Court 1770. Will names: Sons Richard, Jr., and Andrew Jr. Son-in-law Richard Blackledge, husband of daughter, Anna Bass. NC*************************************Also listed under Patents granted in His Majesty's part of the Province of NC {Colonial Office 5/319 London} Richard Bass granted 384 acres in Dublin Co. in 1759; 1761 granted 100 acres in Dobbs Co.; 1763 granted 100 acres in Dobbs Co; 1764 granted 360 acres in Duplin Co. The NC Tax list covering 1763 - 1835 lists Richard Basswith 660 acres and 15 slaves.On 15 may 1788 Richard Bass, Joseph Green, William Whitfield, Jr., William McKinne, Sr., David Jernigan, Jr., William McKinne, Jr. & William Fellows, were all appointed Directors and Trustees of the "Laying out and designing of the Town of Waynesborough, NC". {Deed Bk 10, p. 286 Wayne Co. NC} This land which comprised 14 lots on 7 acres was originally deeded to AndrewBass Sr. for 145 10 shillings on 10 January 1787.Richard Bass died in 1792 in Wayne Co. NC. His wife, Sarah, outlived him, for on 6 November 1793 she deeds to her son Uriah "all claim in land given by my deceased husband to my son Uriah Bass and all personal property willed to my grandsons by my deceased husband." {Deed Book 5E, p, 52, Wayne Co.
