Notes
a. Note:   ng child.
Her obituaries state she was 78 and thus born in 1853, but census records of 1860 indicate 1854. She is in the 1870 census as age 16, wife of James which would indicate she was born in 1853 or 1854. The 1900 census indicates she was born in Mar 1853, is age 47, and has been married 33 years______ Milan Standard Obituary, 15 Sep 1932:
"Uncle Jimmie Norvell of north of town, died Sunday evening after several weeks illness, aged 85 years. His wife preceded him in death only 16 months ago. He left two sons, Howard and Wesley, two grandsons, whom he raised, Jimmie and Earl Norvell, and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren. Uncle Jimmy has been a familar character on the streets of our town for many years. This summer especially, he has been seen much, with his little great grandson. The child's love for him, and his love for the child was something out of the ordinary. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday p.m. by Rev. Winney of Galt. The pallbearers were his grandsons. Interment in the Humphreys cemetery beside his wife"
James Norvell convicted of 1st degree murder in Linn County in 1887 for the murder of John T. Goddard (reported in papers as Jim or Tim). Son Howard was found not guilty. Emmazella was initially convicted of second degree murder in Linn Co, but on appeal trial moved to Sullivan Co. The retrial found James guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced in Oct. 1888 to 11 years in the Missouri State Pententiary. James served 6 years of his sentence, it was commuted by the Governor of Missouri on Nov 17, 1893. He was discharged on Jan. 5, 1894 under the 3/4 law. Emmazella apparently found not guilty in Sullivan County since no record of her sentence has been found. The man he murdered is buried in Alpha Cemetery, Grundy Co, Missouri "T. H.
