Notes
a. Continued:   The telephone service on the farm he bought south of Humphreys, MO was a local private exchange. All farmers on the road were on a party line and all used crank phones. Each subscriber had a unique combinations of rings made by cranking the lever on the side of the phone and producing a series of short and long rings.
Since it was a party line, everyone on the line heard all rings and were supposed to answer only their own calls. However, many people liked to hear their neighbor's conversations and would listen silently on other's calls. A neighbor, Catherine Forson, was one of the best listeners. Elsworth said if you cranked her number, she knew she had plenty of time to answer. The best way to call Catherine was to crank your own number, thus guaranteeing she would be on the line quickly to avoid missing any gossip.
If phone service was disrupted after a big wind or storm, the farmers would drive up and down the roads looking for broken lines. They would temporarily repair them and hang the lines out of the way awaiting regular repairmen
