Notes
a. Note:   ren are listed as being native OH and her son Daniel stated in the 1880 Sullivan Co, MO census and in the 1900 Linn Co, MO census that she was born in OH. Her obituary states she was born in Redstone, VA
There is no proof that Elizabeth is daughter of Walter Cook. This is speculation based on the Smith/Cook marriage in Harrison County, and the proximity of Walter Cook's family to Daniel Smith's family in the 1830 and 1840 Harrison Co, OH censuses. This speculation is supported by the fact that James and Elizabeth Smith appear to have named their first son after his father, Daniel, and their second son after her supposed father, Walter, thus following the 19th century naming tradition. James' sister Amelia married Elizabeth's brother David Cook and David and Amelia named their first two sons Walter and David, thus reinforcing this assumption, but there is no proof at this time that Elizabeth and David are sister and brother Elizabeth first bought property in Monroe Co., IA on 3 Oct 1855 from William Holcomb (see copy of deed). She subsequently bought and sold several pieces of property in Monroe Co., with last known sale of property to J.R. Heurford 6 Jan 1882, she being in Lucas Co. IA at the time of sale. The sale is witnessed by William Irvine, husband of dau. Margaret
Elizabeth's obituary states she was the mother of eight children. Only six have left any record of their existence. It states:
"Elizabeth Cook was born in Redstone Co. Virginia, March 11, 1805. She passed away from earth suddenly, September 12th 1893, from the home of her daughter, in certain hope of a blessed immortality. In early childhood she removed with her parents to Harrison Co, Ohio. At the early age of thirteen she gave her heart to God, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she lived a faithful devoted member until death. She was married in 1830[1832] to James Smith. They removed to Iowa, in 1854, and the year following she was bereft of her husband. To them were born eight children of whom three survive to cherish her precious memory. For about three years she has been in declining health, and since January last it has been evident that the days of her earthly sojourn were almost numbered. Her death was sudden, the cause internal hemorrhage, but her peace and rest were complete. A life disciplined by sorrow and trial, has found congenial environment and true condition, in the worship of the skies. All who know her and those who loved her dearly, feel that her entrance into the heavenly home is the assured victory of her life. The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Russell, conducted in the absence of her pastor at conference, by Rev. D. L. Maine of Chariton, and was attended by a large concourse of people, who cherish for her a blessed memory"
Note:   Elizabeth's birthplace was derived from 1860 & 1870 Monroe Co, IA and 1880 Lucas Co, IA censuses where she stated she was born in VA. Note however that in the 1850 Morgan Co., OH Census she and child
